However, the Cardinals (14-8, 6-4 ACC) held strong and stifled the Syracuse (8-14, 1-9 ACC) attack with an astounding defensive effort. 'Cuse Stat Pack Once again the Orange was led by Silvi Uattara with 13 kills on the night. However, Louisville's defense turned in nothing short of a spectacular performance, recording 16 team blocks to go along with the third best team in the ACC for digs per set. Stacey Smith recorded the second most kills for 'Cuse with seven while Monika Salkute and Lindsay McCabe each had four. Feeding the Orange attack, Gosia Wlaszczuk tallied 22 assists to go along with two kills. Overall the 'Cuse defense played well as it tied Louisville with 59 digs on the night and four different players had double-digit digs. Belle Sand got the nod at libero for the Orange and played well. Her 12 digs on the team was second to Salkute who had 13 in the match. Uattara and Wlaszczuk each finished with 11. Blocking it was once again Leah Levert who led the way with six blocks and also had two kills of her own. She and Lucie Guttakovskaia played a large role down the stretch in Syracuse's second set victory. Guttakovskaia had two blocks of her own along with Uattara and McCabe. Salkute had the second most on the team with three. Set-By-Set Breakdown Louisville came out of the gates on a tear winning five of the first six points and eventually extended its lead to 9-3 before the Orange called its first timeout. Following the timeout, the Cardinals forced another Syracuse timeout in response to an 8-2 run to bring the score to 16-5. The Orange began to gain some life, playing the match much more closely coming out of the break. 'Cuse was outscored 9-7 down the stretch to drop the set, 25-12. It appeared Syracuse would face a similar fate in the second after the Cardinals opened up with a 5-0 run to begin the set. However, a 7-4 run pulled Syracuse within striking distance and bringing the score to 9-7, Louisville. 'Cuse hung around, never letting the Cards out of reach until a 6-0 burst gave Syracuse a 16-15 lead. From that point forward the teams traded blows until a 4-0 run presented set point in the face of the Cardinals. After giving up the ensuing point, Silvi Uattara drove one into the floor to take the set, 25-22. The third began just how the second ended. Both teams struggled to maintain a lead until the Cardinals jumped out in front on an 8-1 run to take a 16-11 lead. From there the Cards never looked back, taking the set 25-16. With the wind back in its sails, Louisville surged in the fourth set to a 15-4 lead before 'Cuse began to regroup. The Orange was able to pull within seven before Louisville busted out an 8-4 burst to win the match. Next Up Sunday, the Orange will get another shot at defeating one of the top teams in the conference. Pittsburgh will host Syracuse at 1:00 PM.
