Been meaning to post this, but did Ohio State use our theory of beating Clemson?

Seems like Venables loves to make the last adjustment on D, right before the ball is snapped. Our O in 2017 (in our win) would line up fast, check with the sidelines - make a late adjustment - and then snap in the middle of Clemson’s “Venables last word” adjustment. Other times, we just went tempo.

Ohio State did the same thing in their playoff win.

Tempo probably helped. It probably helps against basically every defense. I think in this case, it was more elite offensive players executing beautifully.

Yeah, no doubt they did it with better athletes and to greater effect. It’s not just tempo - it’s a glitch in the Venables matrix, too.

Yeah they got caught a few times confused, not knowing what alignment to be in and waiting for the sideline call. Hard to knock Venables but man sometimes you have to let kids play and stop over coaching them.

Tempo and a physical Oline works..
Yup physical and it was a simple scheme. A lot of outside/inside zone in 11/12 personnel. They use the TE as a FB for lead and kick blocks.

Day must have read my post when I suggested that's how we use Elmore (instead of a traditional fullback), either that or he was watching Dino's Bowling Green tape. ;-)

But thats how Elmore is used lol. Its a hybrid position for Dino. Elmore can line up as a in line TE, Off line TE, off set somewhere in the backfield ( off tackle, off guard) He's rarely in a traditional full back position. Out of those sets they run their zone and gap run plays with variation. Its also sets up looks they hope to get from defenses. When defenses see a heavy run set, they often leave their corners locked on the outside Wr's so they can get the safeties in the box on run action. Thats when Dino takes those shots down the field to the outside Wr's because he know he will get 1v1 look.

Credit to Gilbert he was trying to use this formation in the ND game (maybe that's why we had some success; as both running TDs came from this formation.) Lutz's TD run was the exact same play as the Tucker run though it wasn't Elmore in the game who throws the block it was a different kid. 5 OL with the TE acting has the hybrid/wingback off the LOS and that's fine. If we go with a traditional fullback and TE, that's no good, that's not the HCDB base offense to be successful.

21 and 12 personnel was never his base formation but they are formations he's used often the last 5 years. Its part of his offense.

I just watched the first 6 mins of video (mid second quarter). They had already ran 13 plays in 21 personnel. Some of their biggest plays came out of that set. Not sure why you thought they didnt use it at all.

Agreed. Isn't this how most programs are using the flex TE position? Elmore is not being used as a traditional FB. Very few true fullbacks anymore. The one limitation with Elmore being used this way is the D does not treat him as a receiving threat, but that probably is the point.

Totally agree. He is not a pass threat but they don’t throw to the TE’s either when they are in there.
