Prior to high school, football is a summer sport in Canada (not sure if it is the same thing at the youth level south of the border). The result is you have guys playing hockey in the winter, and football in the summer. By the time you get to senior high school football, guys who have played both growing up but haven’t made it to the CHL yet (draft year is grade 10) are more likely to try to go the Canadian University football route than continue on with hockey.
