Syracuse, N.Y. -- It was impossible not to notice all the changes. Sandwich platters were spread out in the lobby of the Ensley Athletic Center, a mini-smorgasbord of snacks to feed recruits and their families on hand to watch an unpadded practice on the first weekend of March. The opening of spring practice turned into an open house. Recruits and their families crowded the indoor practice facility in a manner that is rarely seen with media members milling around. But it wasn’t the number of visitors fourth-year coach Dino Babers referenced after practice; it was the caliber of the player lured to Central New York as snow flurries fell from the sky Sunday morning he couldn’t ignore. “That was probably one of the best star counts that we’ve ever had at a practice here at Syracuse,” Babers said of the recruits that took in Sunday’s practice. “It’s opening day here. They could be at a lot of places, but they’re here in Syracuse, New York.” Folks tend to take notice after winning 10 games at a place that hadn’t done so since 2001. It’s certainly not a bad thing many of the recruits on hand weren’t old enough to remember the Syracuse football program that cratered under Greg Robinson a decade ago. If their knowledge and interest in the program is dependent on last season’s resurgent, 10-3 season, all the better for a staff looking to build momentum in 2019 and beyond.
