Loved John Harmon. I recall him broadcasting away games from the WHEN studio on James Street - complete with piped in crowd noise. He read from a ticker tape and had to make it sound as if he were actually at the game. He was very good at it. My favorite college basketball broadcaster was Dave Cohen, when he was the sports director for WAER as a student at SU. He was outstanding. He had a great voice and presented the game in much the same way that Marv Albert did back then. "The Kid (Greg Kohls) shoots! The Kid hits!!" Jake C made a mistake in letting Doug Logan walk - while negotiating hard to save money. Doug is an excellent broadcaster, and was a great ambassador for the University. My all time favorite though was Red Parton. A great man. A Syracuse legend. He was involved in every major Syracuse sports team over the course of his life. Few recall the Syracuse Football Radio Network that actually competed with WSYR. Red Parton called the games for the Network. My worst Syracuse Football memory was 1968. The Orange was having a solid season - 4 and 1 at the time I think. The team traveled to the West Coast to play the California Golden Bears - I don't think they were referred to as "Cal" back then. We lost 43-0. And for Ben Schwartzwalder, it was never the same - we were never a factor nationally after that day. I recall Red Parton on the radio broadcast say four to five times that day: "Panczyszyn (Rich) wants to throw . . . he does! . . Intercepted!" An awful day for the Orange.
