Women's Rowing Opens at Head of the Charles
World's biggest two-day regatta
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's rowing team will kick off its fall season on Saturday when it heads to Boston, Mass. for the Head of the Charles. Syracuse will send three boats to the world's largest two-day regatta.
"The fall season provides a lot of opportunity," head coach Justin Moore stated. "We utilize small boats a ton in the fall and then move into the big boats in the spring. Small boats develop athletes better. They create higher accountability, which I think that is something the women point out within our training sessions."
Syracuse will send out two boats in the championship fours and one boat for the championship double. Last year, Holly Johnston and Rebecca Soja placed fifth in the championship double and were the top collegiate finishers. Seniors Caroline Habjan and Amy Ludovici will attempt to defend Syracuse's title in the double.
The varsity "A" four boat will be coxed by senior Katherine Isaza and rowed by sophomore Emily Carey (stroke), junior Kari Tomeny (3), senior Georgia Hamilton (2), and junior Deirdre Fitzpatrick (bow).
The varsity "B" four boat will made up of sophomore Alyssa Vasiliou (coxswain), senior Chelsea Frawley (stroke), freshman Julia Vander Hoeven (3), sophomore Saydee McQuay (2), and senior Sienna DeSantis (bow).

Top collegiate finisher in the championship fours
BOSTON, Mass. – The Syracuse University women's rowing team began its fall season at the 50th Annual Head of the Charles, the world's largest two-day regatta, this weekend. The Orange recorded a third-place finish in the women's championship fours race and was the top collegiate boat in the event.
"That was our target that what we were looking to try and do," head coach Justin Moore said. "It's been a thing we have been hunting for a couple of years now. It was great that these guys were able to have that performance and reach that milestone for the program today."
In the women's championship fours on Sunday, Syracuse's "A" boat placed third out of 17 boats, finishing behind two US Rowing national team boats. Coxed by senior Katherine Isaza and rowed by sophomore Emily Carey (stroke), junior Kari Tomeny (3), senior Georgia Hamilton (2), and junior Deirdre Fitzpatrick (bow), the boat finished in the three-mile race in 18.29.981.
"The championship event is where the top performing collegiate crews, national teams, and aspiring national team athletes go," added Moore. "We have been chasing the top collegiate finish in the championship four since I started taking the crew to Head of the Charles, three or four years ago. Last year, we thought we had a pretty good chance. The crew came off the water last year and said they did not handle the conditions well, they did not handle the environment well, and did not handle the stage well. A lot of them wanted to have a do-over. This year's group got that do-over."
The "B" boat finished in 10th place in the championship fours, coming in at a time of 19.12.473. The "B" boat was comprised of sophomore Alyssa Vasiliou (coxswain), senior Chelsea Frawley (stroke), freshman Julia Vander Hoeven (3), sophomore Saydee McQuay (2), and senior Sienna DeSantis (bow).
On Saturday, Syracuse sent out seniors Caroline Habjan and Amy Ludovici for the women's championship doubles race. The pair finished in 13th place overall, covering the course in 18:46.280. Habjan and Ludovici were the top collegiate pair in the event.
Syracuse returns to the water next weekend at the Princeton Chase in Princeton, N.J. on Sunday, October 26.
