This is an update of a post I did last spring. Unfortaintely for the Rangers, Ic an't move them down from 1961. I was rooting for them since the Mets were uncompetitive and I decided I wanted a team that either had never won it. Instead we got a team winning it's 11th World Series. Since all the NFL teams I've ever followed, (Theb Bowns, Broncos, Dolphins, Colts and Eagles), stink this year, I'll be in the same mode: rooting for someone who has never won an NFL title but could do it this year, or at least a team that's waited along time since the last title.

The Giants won the World Series last year, for the first time since 1954. I decided to create an up-to-date, (as of April 2011, now updated through the 10/11 World Series) list of each current major league franchise in baseball, football, basketball and hockey in terms of how long they have waited to win the championship. Next to the team name, I’ve listed either the last year they won their sports title, or, if they’ve never won it, when the franchise was founded. (I decided to put the year first.)

I haven’t accounted for franchise shifts: The football Cardinals haven’t won the NFL title since 1947. They were in Chicago then. They moved to St. Louis in 1960 and to Phoenix in 1988, (they renamed themselves the Arizona Cardinals in 1994). They are listed as waiting since 1947 to win a title again. I decided to count titles in former leagues such as the AFL, ABA or WHL as they were the ultimate titles those teams could have won in those years. Thus the Bills have been waiting since 1965, when they won the AFL title, not 1960, when they were founded. The current Cleveland Browns were founded in 1999 and I have listed them there but of course Cleveland has not celebrated a football title since 1964. That title was won by the franchise that is now the Baltimore Ravens who have since won another, (2000). The “year” for football is the year in which the season began. Thus the Cowboys last won in 1995. For basketball and hockey, it’s the year in which the season ended. Thus the Boston Celtics last won in 2008 and the Pittsburgh Penquins in 2009.

Sooooo….if your team can’t win and you don’t bear a grudge toward the teams at the top of this list, you might consider rooting them on so their ship can finally come in as the Giants did last year.
