From OE's daily links (thanks Dan!), Tom Lemming's scouting report on Morgan:

"He has been a combine standout for the past two years. Wayne shows the college scouts what they need to see in a cover corner. He's one of the fastest players in the state of New York, showing quick feet and a compact and efficient backpedal. He also reads quarterbacks well, closes quickly on the ball, and shows good recovery speed. He has the kind of speed that will allow him to run with any of the nation's top WR prospects."

I guess I was primarily under the impression that Morgan was a S. What this D desperately needs is a true cover corner. Although Morgan played S in HS, I now tend to think that was due more to the fact that he played QB on offense. At the HS level, playing S, especially in a cover 1, is a little less physically demanding than playing CB. Physically, he projects more as a CB: 5'11" 191, with a 35-inch vertical , 75-inch wingspan and 10.8 100-meter (per his Bio).

It will be interesting to see how Morgan performs in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl on January 3 in Phoenix (TV: CBS). He is listed as a CB for the West. Note: Morgan is waiting until signing day to announce. If he performs well in this bowl at CB, I wonder how many other programs will try to jump in late...

I do not like that he is waiting until signing day -- seems like he is hoping something better comes along

Or he's not sure. Or he's being an 18 year old kid and milking it for all its worth- just for the fun of it.

I think he would be a safety at schools like Alabama and Michigan but can definitely play corner at SU.

because they recruit pure cover corners better than him all the time

so that wouldnt make him a safety at those schools...and not every corner in the big ten and sec is a five star. there are plenty of 3 star studs out there...

why? doesnt make any sense, his stats and skills set scream cb at the division 1 level...

He would be facing a MUCH, MUCH different athlete at Alabama and to some extent Michigan. I do not believe he would be able to cover SEC and Big Ten skill players one on one. Not their #1 or #2 receivers anyway.

Have you seen him play?

Yes. Three times in person, twice on TV. I also worked in division one football for a number of years. People need to temper their expectations with Wayne. He is playing in one of the worst football conferences (PSAL) in the country. Yes, I said the country.

Unrealistic expectations are something Wayne has been dealing with since his freshman year. Once he gets to college, I think he will begin to get more comfortable and will excel at a school like Syracuse. My guess would be three year starter at CB with the chance to be all-conference as a junior and senior. Like I've said before, while I do not believe he is a four star player, he will be a solid player for the Orange.

Thanks. I knew you had some kind of background in the college game. I appreciate the insight.

The more I read/hear about this kid, the more a) I want him at SU and b) think he will need a year or two before he truly has an impact on the field (which isn't a bad thing, but I mention it because it seems people think he will get serious burn on Day 1).

That is very encouraging. You are also speaking like you know Wayne will be in Orange. Is that the case or are you speaking in more general terms?

Yes but again, it was in PSAL action so there was not much competition. I will say that he is straight line fast. He struggles a bit with flexibility in his hips. He can get away with this in the ACC and BE. That would be exposed at CB in the SEC.

Strictly general terms. It is down to Syracuse and UConn and I can't fathom losing him to the Huskies. If that happens, I'd be very, very concerned.

Thanks again. 2 more, then I promise to stop bothering you. How does Morgan compare to Reddish as a Sr. (I think he played in the PSAL, too)? Any thoughts on who the best 2-3 players coming out of NYC are this year or next?
