I was laughing at that same thing. They, and everyone else, know it just isn't worth wasting the extra letters on. Might as well be a number of other four letter words, but "Pitt" gives everyone the same idea as those other ones.

They hate being called VPI, which makes it all the more fun to call them that. They went to "Virginia Tech" because they felt it made them stand out from VCU and VMI. Their real name "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University" is way too long to be used on anything, but the acronym "VPI&SU" leads to another derogatory nickname we like to use,"Vippy Sue".
