A couple buddies and I were comparing notes, and we couldn't even figure out if there was a cohesive student section for football in the 90s. I know that I always had a student ticket, and unlike the current setup the seats were specific and reserved (thank god, I am not a fan of happenstance and first-come first-serve seating), but I remember sitting ALL over the place. One year 3rd level end zone, one year 2nd level, couple years various places on the sidelines. I feel like student seating was much more broadly spaced out to the point I can't even definitely recall if it was an actual "student section" or not.

I know that this has been a renewed point of emphasis the last 5-10 years, and massive kudos to the Otto's Army crew for helping elevate this to a top tier student section after some down years. But was it even a thing in the 90s?

yes there was a student section.

I saw the Boston College tip in ultra slow motion from the first or second row, on the sidelines near where the basketball court was, across the stadium from the visitors guest tickets (which are in the corner I think).

I was there from ‘89-‘94 we were where the students are now and we also wrapped around to surround the home tunnel. I have mentioned this before over the years but then the railing collapsed against Texas I was the first one over, one of the few times I’ve seen my life flash before my eyes. Scary as hell and then the Dome bafoons wanted to eject us for being on the field. I played hurt and got to stay . Today’s Student Sections kick our butts I hate to admit although I like to think my buddies and I “left it all out there”

I didn't know that not having a student section was ever a thing in major college sports.. at least not ever since I've been watching

You went to Syracuse, attended games, and aren’t sure if there was a student section?

Am I reading this right?

I was right behind you and likely ended up on top of you. I though we killed poor Marvin Graves at the bottom of that pile.

It was wild, I remember screaming and patting the top of his helmet and then all hell broke loose.

There was definitely a student section (I would often sit in my Dad's company's box right above the student section and would high-five drunk college kids as an 8-year-old), but the Dome was kind of strange in the 90s. If you look at pictures, very few people wore orange.

Very bizarre. He’s describing my experience for hoops. Freshman year we were put up too. Sophomore year, down low behind the basket, then junior year and beyond in the pull out bleachers. Never once did I think am I in a student section?

For football, we’d often get moved for Parents Weekend if they didn’t come to the game. Even then we called it the orphaned students section.

Was that the company box that handed Rainbow Hair guy a beer after he crowd surfed all the way up the student section to a box?

I know there was a student section. I was merely asking if 30 years ago, was it as concentrated in the same area or if it was more scattered. I swear I sat in some areas very different from where the seats are now. Heck for hoops i swear i remember sitting on the midcourt movable section one season, where NO students sit now. Moving on though, I've been sufficiently reminded.

The current section is a lot bigger than it was in the early 00s. Attendance way up for students. Quite impressive.
This is probably what had me misremembering. It definitely feels better defined and more raucous than I remember

When I was there, football student section went from the 30 and wrapped into the end zone. For hoops it went from mid court and wRapped around the basket

All seats were assigned. Football everyone just sat crammed in.

Senior year (87-88) I had 4th row half court as my season tickets with my girlfriend.

In the 90s I think they made all student tickets general admission, so I’d you showed up late, you sat up high.

A big portion of the pullout seating was student seating in the 90s for hoops. Don't remember when, maybe around 2000 - but they moved it behind the basket at some point with the pitch of "having the students in one area" when reality was they wanted the donor money for a prime seating location and needed to boot the students to get it.

Seating was definitely not GA until after 2000. I was there 95-99 and I am someone super type A in needing to know EXACTLY where my seat is (I wont fly Southwest for this reason). I loved having reserved seating as an undergrad that seemed to get better each season.

You left out one of the main reasons the students got moved. Those seats were across from our bench and often on tv and except for a couple games a year, were half empty. The students did it to themselves.
