Watched SU and duke games last night

And typical for JB teams in preseason the intensity just wasn't there IMO. Hate duke but the way they played w intensity for most of the game was impressive as usual. As opposed to duke I thought we played hard for like the first 8 mins, got like an 8 pt lead and then we fell asleep. Then woke up for last three mins right before it was too late. IMO if we play hard for whole game like duke (or say Arizona) did against a cupcake last night we win this by twenty. Having said that do I think we are a top ten team right now? Prob not! The minn game should be interesting, hope we can pull it out or at least play hard for close to 40 mins...

I have always admired Duke's fierceness no matter who they are playing. Sometimes it is sickening, but there you go. I have never played basketball and so don't understand it well, but I do wonder what is behind our lack of intensity. People will say our guys are disinterested, or bored, or sleepy, implying they don't WANT to play well. (It reminds me of how kids with ADHD can be described as lazy. Oh! Our players have also been described as lazy.)

I don't believe that our players who live to play these games are "disinterested" when they play poorly. There is something psychologically afoot, that I do believe. Are the players afraid of being pulled? Is there some contentiousness in the ranks? Does the pressure of expectation paralyze them (a la CJ and Grant)? There is a deeper explanation than "lazy," of that I am sure.

We got up 8 after about 8 mins and acted like the game is over. IMO JB, Hop, Red, and Gmac can not allow this to happen. They need to get in the kids faces sooner...

I would agree that it is the coach's jobs to motivate these kids, but my question is why do they need it? Tis a mystery. I would like to have them all in therapy and pry it out of them with my awesome skills.

It all comes down to the Coaches not embedding it in the players heads to play with intensity and passion 100% of the time imo. This is what happens. Give them some rope and they hang themselves by letting the other team gain confidence and believe they can win.

We almost never lose any of the ooc games we play.

Could it have anything to do with the setting of the game? Cameron is always packed and screaming fans are right on top of the action. Meanwhile, our players play early season games in a cavernous stadium with plenty of empty seats. Of course if people feel we play this way when we are away from the dome, my theory goes right out the window.

I always wonder about this too. That standing and clapping from the crowd also is like a slow, trance-like loop. I don't know. I personally think they start games better on the road. Just my opinion.

You know, SoBe, I, too, have felt that they get more energy playing in hostile territory. Some of them over the years have said as much. And I feel the clapping routine does nothing to raise their spirits. Nothing! And the Dome is cavernous in early season. I will personally confess that I love the early games because I feel I can relax and enjoy the team. I go to a game to relax! (That's funny.)

I don't know what you and I can do about this, though.

I don't think it had to do with lack of intesity or trying. Just 2 bad halves. Made it a close game throughout.

You can't give up 49% shooting to st francis in the first half we were lucky they only put up 26. And you absolutely, absolutely can't only score 26 points in the second half. St francis is a good team and we don't have a killer chemistry right now.

Cuse runs a bring it to us defensive attitude, and when they lack explosive offense there is no blowout unless the other team can't score anything against our zone.

Duke always plays fiercely and to their potential. Just ask Lehigh.
I have heard this for years about JB teams vs Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, etc. Unless people watch those teams every game, like we do SU, you don't know that they play 100% all the time. I bet they don't.

I have heard this for years about JB teams vs Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, etc. Unless people watch those teams every game, like we do SU, you don't know that they play 100% all the time. I bet they don't.

Of course they don't play 100% all the time. But I have watched a LOT of Duke games, and they are like Atilla the Hun. If they can slaughter you, rather than just kill you nicely, they will SLAUGHTER you. I have actually liked that JB doesn't have that mentality, but sometimes I wish he had a little of it.
