Syracuse made it a three-point game with 11:37 remaining in regulation, but could not get any closer on the road. For the second straight contest, Syracuse (15-7, 5-4) played a top-10 opponent on the road. Down 10 points at halftime, the Orange climbed back into the game in the second half. Junior forward Taylor Ford knocked down a 3-point field goal with 11:37 to make it 39-36 with less than 12 minutes left. Over the remainder of regulation, Florida State (21-2, 8-1) would outscore Syracuse, 23-16, to win the first game played by the two teams in Tallahassee, Fla. Junior guard Brianna Butler recorded a team-high 15 points on the night. It marked the seventh time she led the squad in scoring this season, which ranks second on the club. Ford and senior guard Diamond Henderson each had 10 points, while sophomore center Briana Day was one point shy of a double-double. Day tallied nine points and 14 boards against the Seminoles. The host Seminoles came out hot on Monday night. Syracuse led 2-1 after a lay-up from junior guard Cornelia Fondren 39 seconds into the contest. Florida State responded with an 8-0 run to take a 9-2 advantage with 16:47 remaining in the half. Syracuse was able to cut it to a six-point deficit on two different occasions in the opening 20 minutes, but ultimately trailed 28-18 at the halftime intermission. Florida State was able to jump out to a 10-point lead largely in thanks to 13-of-28 shooting from the field. It marked the largest halftime deficit the Orange had faced during the 2014-15 season. Out of the halftime break, Syracuse was able to cut it to a five-point game. The visiting Orange went on a 9-4 run to open the game, making it a 32-27 contest. Butler knocked down a 3-point field goal and a deep 2-point field goal during that stretch. Florida State was able to build its lead back up to 11 points, but Syracuse came right back with another run. The visitors went on an 8-0 run to make it a three-point contest, 39-36, with 11:37 remaining. Ford knocked down a 3-point field goal to make it a three-point game. On the next possession, Butler had a chance to tie up the game with a 3-point field goal attempt. The shot did not fall and FSU would convert on its next opportunity. From there, the Seminoles would lead by as much as five points for the rest of the way. The Syracuse women's basketball team will take on a nationally-ranked opponent for the third consecutive game when it hosts No. 13/12 North Carolina on Thursday night in the Carrier Dome. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. Thursday night's contest also is National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
