Went to the SU- NC St game today with a retired womens' college coach and a former referee evaluator. SU really was the better team throughout despite the score not reflecting it till later in the 2nd half. Despite trailing at the half, they definitely seemed to be in control but weren't executing with poor shot selection. The women could show the mens' team how to shoot foul shots though making over 69%.(18 for 26)
Some very good young talent. Briana Day, their slender 6'4" center, is just a sophomore an impressive rebounder, effective on the offensive end ending up with a double double, 11 points, 16 rebounds, 7 blocks. Would have liked to have seen her get the ball more - she only took 7 shots. Alexis Peterson also a soph, the starting pg is quick and the team's best 3 point threat hitting almost 38%. The team takes way too many 3 point shots though. Offensively, it's a guard oriented team with the 2 starting guards taking 31 out of the game's 54 shots. The team also too a disproportionate number of 3 point shots making only 8 of 31. They need to be way more selective, attacking the basket , creating for each other and not settling for low % 3 point shots. A transfer, Diamond Henderson, who is playing her last year here at SU is a strong player coming off the bench along with Taylor Ford, a junior. Those 2 girls impressed me the most off the bench. They play a zone defense but mixed it up today with a zone press that seemed to energize SU in the 2nd half.
With the women, everyone gets tacos when they score over 65 points. Many happy kiddies when it was taco time today. Fun time and those that think Buzz Williams, Jamie Dixon, Mick Cronin etc put on a show on the sideline, watch Coach Q - he never sits down, is constantly yelling as he roams the sidelines. Very very demonstrative. Pretty good crowd too - over 1,000 were there. Nice easy going environment where everyone gets a great seat to view the game. Perfect venue to take kids and introduce them to the game too, creating shared memories and great new young SU fans.
