SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 22 Syracuse University women's basketball team returns home for its first contest at the Carrier Dome since the 2014-15 season-opener against Vermont on Monday night. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.

Syracuse took No. 1/2 South Carolina to the wire in its latest game. The Orange led with two minutes remaining in the contest, but ultimately suffered a 67-63 loss to the top-ranked Gamecocks. Junior guard Brianna Butler led the way for Syracuse, scoring 18 points on four 3-point field goals.

Monday's game marks the first of four consecutive home matchups for Syracuse. This week, the Orange hosts Vermont on Monday and then takes on Penn State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Thursday.

Rebound Machine
Sophomore center Briana Day recorded consecutive double-doubles in the Syracuse women's basketball team's past two games at the 2014 Junkanoo Jam. Day became the first Syracuse player to record back-to-back double-doubles since Shakeya Leary did so against Dartmouth (Nov. 14, 2013) and Cornell (Nov. 18, 2013). She averaged 13.0 points and 14.0 rebounds per game during the stretch. For her efforts she was named to the All-Junkanoo Jam Team.

Day put together one of the best performances of her young collegiate career at Duquesne on Nov. 19. The Raleigh, N.C. native led the team with 22 points and 19 rebounds. Both totals were career-highs for the second-year center.

She became the 10th player in program history to record at least 19 rebounds in a single game. It marked the most rebounds by an Orange player in a contest since Shakeya Leary pulled down 19 boards against Seton Hall on Jan. 8, 2011.

Day currently averages 12.2 points and 12.8 rebounds per game for the 2014-15 season. She currently ranks second in the ACC in rebounding and ninth nationally. The sophomore center leads the conference in defensive rebounds, averaging 8.0 per game. Her 8.0 defensive rebounds per contest ranks 10th nationally. Her 19-rebound effort also was the second-most by an ACC player so far this season.

Going Streaking
Syracuse has won 61 non-conference home games in-a-row, dating back to the 2006-07 season, head coach Quentin Hillsman's first season at the helm of the Orange program. He is 63-5 in his career in such games.

Last season, the Orange went 6-0 in out-of-conference play at the Carrier Dome after going 6-0 in 2012-13. In 2010-11, Syracuse was 14-0, 12-0 in 2009-10, 8-0 in 2008-09, and 7-0 in 2007-08. Syracuse's last non-conference home loss was on Dec. 22, 2006 to Canisius, suffering a 56-43 loss.

Series Breakdown
Monday night marks the eighth meeting between Syracuse and Vermont. The Orange owns a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series. In the teams' last meeting, Syracuse defeated Vermont, 79-75, on Dec. 18, 2002.

Syracuse Rolls Past Vermont, 94-63
62nd consecutive non-conference win at home

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 21/22 Syracuse University women's basketball team exploded for a season-best 94 points in a 94-63 victory against Vermont on Monday night in the Carrier Dome. It marked the most points scored by a Syracuse team since a 97-42 win against Maine on Nov. 24, 2013.

"Coming off a trip like one to the Bahamas, the first thing you want to do is just win the basketball game," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "In the first half, we came out a bit flat early and we got it going for a few minutes and then we got sloppy and didn't really make plays. I give Vermont a lot of credit. They made a lot of threes in that stretch and they have some players who we knew could shoot who made some shots in it."

Syracuse's defense was at its best against Vermont (0-6). The Orange (5-1) recorded 23 steals, its most during the 2014-15 season. The squad capitalized off its defensive prowess, scoring a season-high 40 points off turnovers, as well.

Senior guard Diamond Henderson led the team in scoring for the second time this season with 16 points. Junior guard Conrnelia Fondren set career-bests in points (14), rebounds (8), and steals (5) on Monday against Vermont. In total, a season-best six players scored in double figures in the team's 62nd consecutive non-conference home victory.

Sophomore forward Isabella Slim was a force on the glass for the Orange on Monday night. Slim matched her career-best with five rebounds in the first six minutes of play. She finished with a personal-high 10 rebounds on the night, which ranked first on the club.

Syracuse jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the opening three minutes of competition. Junior guards Brianna Butler and Fondren each had three points during that stretch. Vermont battled right back, going on a 12-0 run to take its first edge in the contest, 14-11 with 11:32 remaining in the first half.

Over the remainder of the opening frame, Syracuse outscored its opposition, 31-15, to take a 42-29 lead into the halftime intermission. Senior guard Maggie Morrison scored eight points in the final 8:45 of the half to lead the team in scoring in the first half. Morrison finished with 11 points, setting a career-best.

The Catamounts came out of the break with the momentum, cutting the Syracuse lead to 44-38 with 18:06 remaining. Over the next six minutes, everything went the Orange's way as the team went on a 20-0 run to take a commanding 64-38 advantage. The squad never looked back as it cruised to a 94-63 win.

The Syracuse University women's basketball team is back in action on Thursday night against Penn State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Syracuse and Penn State will square off at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.

With 8:52 to go in the first half and Vermont up by two, Syracuse point guard Alexis Peterson grabbed a steal and guard Maggie Morrison sprinted to the other end of the court. Peterson fed Morrison, who caught the ball and settled, bringing her right foot toward her body before sinking a 3 as a Catamounts defender closed in.
Two and half minutes later, Morrison launched another 3 that bounced off the back of the rim and fell in, starting an 18-5 run that the Orange took into the break.
After a foul, Morrison went the bench and high-fived a line of waiting teammates.
“It was a good open look and that’s what we have to take,” SU head coach Quentin Hillsman said. “We can’t pass up open shots. She did a very good job of just knocking down an open three and that’s all we can ask for is when you’re open, shoot the ball and knock it down.”
After being held scoreless in three of the first four games she played this season, Morrison scored eight points in the first half and totaled a career-high 11 on the night. Her two 3s started the deciding run that reclaimed the game for No. 21 Syracuse in the first half. Morrison logged 21 minutes off the bench, grabbing three rebounds and two steals, and shot a team-high 60 percent from beyond the arc in SU’s (5-1) 94-63 win over Vermont (0-6) in the Carrier Dome on Monday.
“It felt good,” Morrison said. “I’ve been struggling in the first couple games this season, but you know having the support and the belief of my teammates and my coaching staff has kept my confidence high and energy high.
“It just went in today I guess.”
With the Orange up 35-29, Morrison missed two shots in a row before sprinting back on defense in frustration. She snagged a defensive rebound then drew a foul, sinking the two ensuing free throws to continue SU’s run — each one with a bounce and a spin of the ball in her hands preceding the shot.
She went to the bench again, hardly staying in her seat while yelling at the defense to “keep it tight.” When she returned to the court three minutes later, she grabbed a steal that gave SU its final possession of the half.
Coming out of the break, Morrison stayed on the bench until 14:36 to go in the second half, when Hillsman practically threw her onto the court.
She ran to the top of the key, faced the net and drained her third 3 of the game. The SU bench rose to its feet, each player hoisting three fingers in the air.
Morrison watched her shot fall, then turned to find to her player to guard on defense.
“Maggie is one of our best shooters on this team,” Peterson said. “Everybody has their nights and I know Maggie is capable of doing that every night.”
And though Morrison had shown moments of frustration throughout the game, the transfer from Vanderbilt who sat out all of last season was the first one jogging toward the locker room following the game — laughing and smiling.
“We need her to make shots,” Hillsman said. “I thought that tonight she did a very good job of taking every open shot. … If she can continue to do that and add another spark that’s coming off the bench, that’s going to be pretty good.”
