NCAA Basketball Stats - NCAA BB Team Possessions per Game on TeamRankings.com

Out of 351.
What is amazing is that for our recent history that is really high.

Over the last 3 years we are 344th out of 351 in possessions per game.

Let’s just call it for what it is.
Jim Boeheim wants low possession, low scoring, low tempo basketball games.
This tempo tells you we don’t want to run and we want less possessions.

We’ll just have to see how it plays out next year. If we play this stall ball crap and continue to not play downhill next season then he’ll sink with the ship.

Are we the only program getting Top 100-ish guys who can’t dribble, pass, shoot, etc.? Cuz plenty of teams have got those. We see them every game in other jerseys not Syracuse. It’s becoming an epidemic here...sigh.

I was scolded already this season saying that I really like to watch those teams play ball in general. On offense especially.
I am convinced some here don't even realize how bad it is, and just think it's the norm. If we ever get back to good basketball- hope next year- people will not have a clue what they are watching!

2015 - 100
2016 - 314

You can see the new trend start back in 2011. Can't pinpoint a reason for why 2015 was an outlier.

we went all zone in 2009-2010. We were so good at scoring that year that opponents seldom had the luxury of taking their time. I also think it took coaches a couple years to realize that the best way to beat a good zone was to use more of the shot clock. That resulted in the tempo dropping into the 200s. When we deliberately stopped running fast breaks is when the bottom truly fell out statistically. I think we’d all take a 200s tempo in a heartbeat now.

Are you not entertained ?

I was thinking about this the other day.

It occurred to me that the majority of our possessions now look like those we use to have bleeding out the clock when up big late in games (so called Stall Ball)

We’ve just extended that strategy for 40 minutes

I was thinking why I haven’t noticed stall ball the last couple years .. and realized that 1. We don’t have too many big leads late
2. In order to notice stall ball is occurring , there would have to be a noticeable change in pace .. which is impossible playing as slow as we do ..

It's because it's a strategy that is compatible with his short bench/penalty box philosophy.

Good post extending it out.
Our offense has been awful since 2012.
I am convinced even if we had a 24 second shot clock we would be low still.
We don’t run anything on offense so we just dribble and chuck.
Defensively the zone causes teams to be patience.
