The model reflects performance against opponent based on perceived strength of schedule, not execution. Points scored is the only thing taken into account, not wins/losses/other variables. For the sake of simplicity, all FCS teams are aggregated because they only play 1 or 2 FBS opponents a year. FCS teams often get beaten badly, which according to the modeling of SRS, makes them a below average opponent. The negative number on offense for Syracuse, then, reflects that it scored a ton of points against a bad opponent. (A 0 would mean an average win over an average opponent.) Syracuse is also the victim here of small base sizes, which are always going to plague an aggregate early in the data collection cycle.

The score cap is installed as a general rule so that a team that wins by 60-0 against one opponent and then loses by 10-7 in its other 11 games doesn't create a long-term bias in the model.

No model is perfect, and the creator of this model freely admits that, as anyone good at what they do would.
