i hated how the Big East for SU ended. and the schools in the Big East do not have a 50K football stadium that they need to fill to be successful, aside from UConn, and they are at 35K-ish. and I do think that SU-Pitt-BC do lack an identity in the ACC kinda the way that I feel about most of the schools in the league: BFD. I could care less about, what, 12 of the teams in conference? Same way most fans down south feel about the northern schools I bet. But SU hoops could've fixed that. They had a chance to interrupt this downward ride. SU ... 1) Used to win with great players AND a great system. 2) Then the player talent slipped, but the system was good enough to still win, because they found players who developed, and jacking up 3s hadn't caught on. 3) Then the system got exposed because the talent slipped moreso due to guys developing too fast and leaving - hey, good for them, but they weren't replaced, and that bad - or guys didn't develop, and that worse, and enough people got Steph Curry disease to beat a full-time zone. 4) That probably marked the beginning of transfer madness / COVID / NIL garbage, and SU slow to adjust to this. 5) Lack of effort on recruiting trail, player development, and coaching. 6) Daddy ball, not knowing / caring it really was time to go. Part of (3) was the 2nd probation, plus a couple of huge misses that weren't entirely probation based, but because players started rushing HS to get to the league early, in Kevin Huerter and even worse, Jamal Murray, whom I believe SU was in a good place with, but he decided all of a sudden to reclassify, SU didn't really have a spot for him, he went UK, and that was that. That was just a slow decline that could and should've stopped, and there were clear plans for it to, but JB changed his mind, and this is where they are. Had it been me, I'd have said, you wanna wreck a sweet 16 team to coach both his kids? fine, when they're done, you're done, unless you get to the final four, but nope. had you fixed that decline, and not stumbled to under .500 in ACC play, life would be better. kev
