Ninety years ago this year, Red Grange -- almost certainly the most famous player in Illinois football history -- suited up for the Illini and singlehandedly destroyed undefeated Michigan, leading equally legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice to dub Grange a "gray ghost."

That performance came on the Illini's 1924 Homecoming, so it's only fitting Illinois will debut its new Nike-designed Grange-honoring "Gray Ghost" alternates on its 2014 Homecoming, vs. Minnesota on Oct. 25. Via Illinois Athletics, have a look:

Of course, they'd work better as an alternate uniform for, say, Penn State moreso than Illinois.

The purpose of a uniform is to be RECOGNIZIBLE. Let's just wear the Seminole road unis, maybe that will scare Clemson more than our jerseys. Ridiculous.
