4th and 8 vs 1st and goal --- huge difference

**** that ref and his bullshit call
Wouldn't it have been 3rd and 8 or was the out of bounds hit on 3rd???

The hit was on 3rd down. Would have been 4th and 6-8 yards, depending on the spot, if not for the penalty.

Don't blame the ref. If you're the DB, you can't even give the ref the ability to make that call. Lyn's hands should have been above his head. Should have used his hips and body to edge him out of bounds. Lack of discipline, a constant theme throughout the day.

The 14 points we gift wrapped to them was huge.

And I wish we could get that 5 yard penalty back before our missed field goal.

Too many miscues.

Agree...way too many miscues. The 14 points is conservative, considering that does not include the flukey interception deflection setting up a very short field for their 2nd TD & the second punt return that set up another very short field for their 3rd TD.

Here's another big difference over the past couple of seasons I've observed...when we have a moment to make that critical big play, it slips through our hands more times than not. Lynch absolutely has to come up with that easy pick in their last drive...game over if so. Galloway commented on such as well. It kind of reminded me of the missed pick six last year in the Rutgirls game...we come up with that there...game over!

Geez guys - Smith lost the damn game. 7 points like that you see very seldom at any level.

I completely disagree with that logic. No one play cost us this game. It was the combined effect of several mistakes together that did us in.

Sad part is, eliminate any one of them and we win. NW was too good of a team to give so many additional chances / big play opportunities.

Certainly not absolving Smith for not picking that ball up or playing to the whistle.

We also missed a 44 yard fg...

Yeah, and that miss came after a dumb penalty backed us up 5 yards. Can't say definitively that the 5 yards was why we lost, but it sure didn't help.

Lots of things to point to in that game, and if any one of them had happened differently / been eliminated, we win.

the yardage bodes well. I'm much more optimistic

We're not going to be down by 3 TD's every single game. I hope. The long passes looked good, but I think that reflected more on situation than scheme.

Everyone is blaming smith on that play, a 5th yr senior QB can't be throwing a backwards pass deep in your own territory. That goes on the QB for putting his back in that position.

Ryan took responsibility for it. Probably not all him, but should to have made that throw under duress without making eye contact with smith.

Eh. He pretty much did cost them the game. I feel bad for him

Smith's mistake had nothing to do with talent or a bad bounce or a bad call or the devil - he just had to have his head in the game. This is something that is coached over and over again from at least HS. I am not saying that we should shoot him or anything but his play was the one that should not have happened under any circumstance. BTW Ryan threw the damn ball to where he was - he simply ran the play too deep.

No play in the 3rd quarter costs you the game.

There were a number of other plays throught the game where you could apply the same logic as "costing us the game"

I bet he doesn't feel that way

Who cares?

I could just as easily make the claim that Lyn cost us the game...or that ST cost us the game on that punt return TD...or that the guy who had a false start right before that missed FG cost us the game.

But the thing is, games are 60 minutes long. Generally speaking, one play doesn't determine the outcome of the game, which is why the logic you are applying is flawed. Smith's gaffe sure didn't help the cause. It was a terrible play. But he didn't make the throw, and he wasn't the only guy standing around not playing until the whistle. And most importantly, that single play did not cost us the game, no matter how you want to spin it.

I don't expect linemen to know that the pass was backward. They don't see it. It's on Smith. Egregious mental errors should get more blame. That was leon lett, knoblauch, motenesque

Sucks to be 0 and 1 but the yardage bodes well. I'm much more optimistic

This is what I took away from the game. Clean up the miscues and we could win a good number of games. Maybe even be one of the best teams in the BigEast this year. We lost this game and the odds are stacked against us against USC next week but we can still win enough for a bowl if we do well in conference. There is no one in the BigEast that we can't beat and if we put up 41 points we'll win most.

Yeah, it really did. As Marrone said in the presser it was like giving them a "free" touchdown.
