McDonald and Bullough are just completely overmatched. You have a third string corner on their best offensive player one on one with no safety to help out. Just a bad play.

On offense, we're still throwing bubble screens to the boundary while outnumbered out there. Then we throw a 7 yard pass the next down on 3rd & 13. Why not run that play on 2nd down? Going forward makes sense. Going sideways when you are constantly outnumbered out there doesn't.

If you want both coordinators gone you might as well get rid of the Head Coach who hired them as well

I'd be okay with that at this point. These guys don't learn.

I am now convinced that McDonald loves the bubble screen so much because it works all the time in practice. Of course, the bubble screen works great when the offensive players outnumber the defensive players, which our defense seems to favor for some reason.

Doing the bubble screen in practice must truly be the movable object vs. the resistible force.

Is imagine he's enjoying watching ND run it.

I think it was SWC who always mentioned the Virginia Tech situation back in the late '80s when Beamer was close to getting sacked. Basically the athletic director told Beamer that either he was hiring the next offensive and defensive coordinators, or Beamer was gone.

They got Bud Foster and the rest is history. I actually think Shafer is a great "face" for the program, and I think he is an above average defensive coordinator. If you surrounded him with talented coordinators, I think he might do well.

Unfortunately that would mean we would have to open up the pocketbook and have an athletic director that could actually make those hires correctly. I don't think we have either of those things.

That's why he thinks the offense can run the bubble, because they always do well against our defense who is incapable of covering the bubble screen.

Defense is playing well, we have no depth at DB. I've had no problem with the way the defense has played this year

Want to save money...Shafer is the head coach and calls the defensive plays during the game. Hire a DC in name only who helps gameplan and does the mid-week grunt work. Problem solved. This coaching staff is recruting better but on game-days and mid-week prep they are over-matched

Our defense is playing rather well.
Our defense has done well with strips and pressure. The scheme was good for the first quarter, and then Kelly figured out what they needed to do against our defense to make things work. Play to the boundaries on one drive where they had us outnumbered, and our 'd' was playing off, and then when we play press one on one coverage to try and take that away on the next series, just throw it over the top.

Bullough isn't putting Winfield in a position to succeed when he has him in one on one press coverage against ND's best athlete.

I agree with that.

That is exactly my point. They are in their second year and still making the mistakes they made the first year. The OJT is clearly not working for them.

Good post.
