The median team in college basketball averages 71.5 possessions per game.

Syracuse averages 67.7 possessions per game.
That ranks 326th out of 351st. Last year we averaged 68.4 and that was with a 35 second shot clock.

The only slower P6(Big East teams included) are
331st Notre Dame 67.4
337th Wisconsin 66.7
340th Michigan 66.4
342nd Clemson 65.4
349th Virginia 63.4

My question is this JB's plan or just a product of the zone. Less possessions tends to favor the weaker team and most years Syracuse isn't the weaker team.

We had more possessions per game last year with a longer shot clock what has happened to our offense?

ND??????? Don't they score a ton of points?

They said on TV during the Virginia game that we play the longest defensive possessions out of anyone in the country. Most of it's the zone, and our guards can't get out and run like previous years because we need to gang rebound because we are so small inside.

Exactly

Combination of the zone and not having a PG. I'd say it's 60/40, with the zone being the primary cause

yeah i tend to agree with this. we still dribble quite a bit in place or run that globetrotter weave over and over again which takes up time. getting really slaughtered on the boards earlier in the season gave teams a bunch of extra possessions as well.

Exactly
The other part is even we do have fast break opportunities, we're scared to attack the basket... it's not even on the radar. Legitimate fast breaks go a long ways to increasing the tempo, at least on the offensive side. A good finishing guard will attempt to push it even if numbers are even... you don't necessarily need a 3-on-2 or 2-on-1. Certainly there are other factors, but it seems like our tempo woes have coincided with Cooney's entry into the starting lineup.

Yea, it's Cooneys fault. Lol. You do realize that like when we had Gmac, Cooneys role on a fast break is to spot up for a trailing 3. And I've seen G many times attack the basket on a 2-2.

With the lineup we have, we don't want to get into an up and down game.

Thursday night's game should be a barn burner.
Just how bad is Duke defensively if they almost hung 100 on them? Holy Moses. Somehow Coach K got them into a track meet.

Dome staff may need to hand out free coffee instead of beer or nobody will be awake to catch the 2nd half.

While we play a slow to average tempo.the 2-3 is perhaps the biggest culprit here. In most cases it really slows down the opposition.

If we played our regular tempo on Offence and the opponents played their regular tempo, we would be much higher than 326th.

Our offensive tempo is 233rd. We play slow on offense. However, that is likely because we don't have any post offense and can't get easy buckets.

and haven't had a real "push it up the floor pg" since Mickey Dubs

that said, its still mostly a byproduct of the zone (as repeatedly mentioned by others)

Yeah, 351st out of 351. The crazy thing is the bottom 4 teams are all ACC schools; Clemson, UVA, BC, and us. And Louisville is sixth from the bottom. Almost exactly middle of the pack (175th) on defensive possessions

The zone slows things down...but the biggest culprit is that we seem very content to hoist up 3's.
Even on turnovers.
Only Gbinije consistently attacks the glass.
Perhaps he and Malachi are the only ones who seem comfortable doing it.

I had not seen our offensive tempo number but that sounds about right.

Ken pom has our offensive tempo at 176th, 17.2 seconds. Te funny thing is, if our average possession was half a second shorter (which I feel like no one would notice) we'd be around 100th.

And our record would be much lower.

???

I am merely claiming that the tempo of our games is really slow due more to the defensive end. Not at all making any statement on strategy or advocating that we play another defence to speed up the opponent.

I think it's too much dribble on the perimeter
