I think these coaches should be careful with the transfers. I think the NCAA will lose if this ability to block transfers is challenged, under the current construct of the athletic scholarship. The scholarships agreement are one year commitments. If the player does not sign on for the next year, he/she should be a free agent. The ability to restrict their movements is akin to baseball's reserve clause, which was struck down in the mid -70's.

If the NCAA really thought it was about academics for first year players, then freshmen would be ineligible.
