2 Seconds From Blown Call/JB Explosion

NCAA Changes Charge Rule Again, Determined to Stop Flops From Ruining the Game (PS; Waters)

The NCAA is tweaking the rules regarding charging fouls and blocking violations yet again.

The NCAA's men's basketball rules committee met in Indianapolis last week and emerged with a recommendation for charge-block calls.

In order to take a charge, the new rule will require a defensive player to be in legal guarding position before the player leaves the floor to pass or shoot. Additionally, the defending player is not allowed to move in any direction before contact occurs, except vertically to block a shot.

Last season, the committee changed the timeframe at which the defender must be in legal guarding position, adjusting it to when the airborne player started his upward motion with the ball to attempt a shot or pass. When reviewing game footage from last season, the committee concluded that those types of plays became more difficult to coach and officiate.

Who Will Have Rak's Back in 2014-15?

Five Contenders with Little Depth (ESPN; Fraschilla; Insider)

...
Jim Boeheim loses Tyler Ennis, C.J. Fair, Jerami Grant and Baye-Moussa Keitato the NBA draft and to graduation, and even there is still enough talent on the roster to make a run at the ACC title, there are more questions than answers for Syracuse this coming season. That is unusual.

It's likely that freshman Kaleb Joseph will man the point guard position. It will be hard for him to top Ennis' freshman season, but he certainly has the opportunity and the tools to be one of the league's best freshmen next season. Junior sharpshooter Trevor Cooney, who cooled off as last season unfolded, needs to shoot the ball with more consistency and find other ways to contribute. Michael Gbinije, the Duke transfer, will see time at both guard spots.

Up front, Orange fans are still waiting for Rakeem Christmas -- who was a Philadelphia high school basketball prodigy -- to become a dominant player. At worst, he should be a double-figure rebounder this coming season in the middle of the 2-3 zone. Six-foot-10 freshmanChris McCullough brings the size, athleticism and energy to be very effective on both ends of the court for Boeheim. If junior big man DaJuan Coleman is recovered from injuries that sidelined him last season and is in condition, he should help as well.

Say It Ain't So, Go. SU Target Jessie Govan Chooses Hoyas (PS; Waters)

A Syracuse recruiting target from the Class of 2015 has decided to attend Georgetown.

Jessie Govan, a 6-foot-10 center out of Wings Academy, announced on Tuesday that he had picked Georgetown. Govan also had offers from Syracuse, Connecticut, Louisville and Seton Hall among others.

Syracuse only recently extended an offer to Govan. The emerging center, rated No. 66 in his class, had an outstanding weekend at the Nike EYBL tournament in Sacramento, Calif., in April. Syracuse's offer came after that event.

Govan's decision has been reported by At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. and https://recruitscoop./barrier_noentry.asp?sid=1220&script=/content.asp&cid=1640658. Both sites' articles require a subscription.

Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner John Swofford announced on Tuesday that the conference's basketball tournament will move to a Tuesday through Saturday format beginning with the 2015 tournament.

The new tournament schedule will feature Friday semifinal games at 7 and 9 p.m. and the championship game on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

#3: 2011-12 Made It to Elite Eight But What If? (PS; Waters)

NO. 3: 2011-12 TEAM

Overall record: 34-3
Conference record (finish): 17-1 (1st in Big East)
Post-season: Lost to Ohio State in NCAA tournament's Elite Eight

Best player: Dion Waiters

He didn't start a single game, but Dion Waiters was without a doubt the best player on the Syracuse roster in 2011-12.

Waiters, a sophomore, scored 12.6 points per game. That was just a shade behind the team's leading scorer, Kris Joseph, who averaged 13.4 points per game. Joseph started every game and played 32.2 minutes per game. Waiters never started and logged just 24.1 minutes per game.

Waiters made 47.6 percent of his shots, including 36.3 percent of his 3-point attempts. He was fifth on the team in minutes played, but led the Orange with 67 steals.

#4: 1988-89 Team Most Talented of Past 26 Years (PS; Waters)

NO. 4: 1988-89 TEAM

Overall record: 30-8
Conference record (finish): 10-6 (3rd in Big East)
Post-season: Lost to Illinois NCAA tournament's Elite Eight

Best player: Pick One

I could go with Derrick Coleman. All he did was average 16.9 points per game and 11.7 rebounds.

I could go with Stevie Thompson. He averaged 18.0 points per game, making a ridiculous 63.9 percent of his field goal attempts and leading the team in steals with 74.

Or I could go with Sherman Douglas. He led the team in scoring at 18.2 points per game, while setting an NCAA record with 326 assists.

Oh, Matt Roe set a school record for 3-point shooting percentage at .474. And there was some freshman named Billy Owens who wasn't bad either.
