The problem is I like uniforms that look nice, irrespective of what half baked idea Nike “likes” to shove down our throats. Catering to the ever-changing wishes of 16 year olds is how you destroy any brand identity, while simultaneously looking like a clown brigade. It’s a short term fix at best, but it creates a long term problem. Our ‘cool factor’ isn’t being Oregon. There is already an Oregon, and they will always Oregon better than we can Oregon. Our ‘cool factor’ is being Syracuse. We have a visuallly appealing color scheme that we’ve used during periods of great success. It’s something that transcends time and looks sharp, something that looks ‘Syracuse,’ and something upon which we can build a bridge between past success, the present, and the future. Big pads, poor film quality, and differences in Jersey fits aside, highlights from the 1980’s and the 1990’s look like they could be happening today. The uniforms still look good. The stupid ‘edgy’ uniform combos that we’ve been wearing over the last X years look, at best, poor, and they will probably never be more in style than they are now. In other words, they will almost certainly never look better than they do now. Additionally, the modern, edgy designs don’t look obviously “Syracuse.” That lack of identity makes it harder for a kid to think about playing for SU, and imagine being the next McNab, Harrison, McPherson, Freeny, and so on. And, that history is what separates us from schools like UConn and Rutgers. Why downplay it? There’s a reason why schools like Alabama don’t change their uniforms. Adults need to make decisions, not 16-25 year olds.
