Jameis Winston Eats His Way Down the Draft Board (grantland.com; Borcas)

Any discussion of the 2015 NFL draft has to begin with Jameis Winston, and right now, any discussion of Jameis Winston has to begin with this photo:

B90ttEvCcAAQrVd.jpg

It surfaced over the weekend and immediately sparked a frenzy of speculation about Winston’s weight and conditioning, much like the unforgettable Fat Eddie Lacy nontroversy of 2013. Winston’s “personal”1 QB whisperer, George Whitfield, attempted to stem the tide of ZOMG JAMEIS IS OBESE! tweets by blaming Winston’s apparent corpulence on “the leash tight around his waist,” but that didn’t stop Jared “The Pillsbury Throwboy” Lorenzen from acknowledging Winston’s seemingly rotund figure. Real recognize real.

Potential Fresh Faces for 2015 All-ACC Football Team (sportswar.com; Quintero)

Brad Kaaya – Miami
  • Sophomore Quarterback
  • 6’4″, 220 pounds
Kaaya entered training camp last season as a long shot to win the Miami quarterback job as an 18-year old freshman. However, sometimes long shots pay off, and it did for the Hurricanes in 2014. Kaaya not only won the starting job, but lead the ACC in touchdown passes with 26, and secured ACC Rookie of the Year honors.

Kaaya connected on 221 of his 378 passes last season, good for 3,198 yards and those 26 touchdown passes. He also only threw 12 interceptions, a credit to the poise and decision making that received praise last season. The Hurricanes not only found a serviceable signal caller in Kaaya, but one who should reach higher limits before he inevitably moves onto the NFL in the future.

Shadrach Thornton – NC State
  • Senior Running back
  • 6’1″, 210 pounds
Shadrach Thornton, who is entering his senior season at NC State has had an up-and-down tenure with the Wolfpack over four years. He lead the team in rushing as a freshman before running into off the field issues as a sophomore that lead to a suspension. 2014 appeared to bring a change to Thornton, however.

Staying out of trouble last season, Thornton returned to his freshman form, falling just short of breaking the 1,000 yard mark. He finished with 907 yards on 164 carries with nine touchdowns, leading the Wolfpack running corps in all categories. He received an All-ACC honorable mention in 2014, and could be poised to take the next step in 2015.

Ranking the ACC's Football/Basketball Coaching Tandems (athlons[orts.com; Fox)

Step back five years and the list of football-basketball coaching tandems in the ACC looks pretty crazy.

That Mike Krzyzewski is the basketball representative at Duke probably makes sense, but what about the Blue Devils having a successful football coach?

Now, that’s weird.

And what about the No. 2 and No. 3 teams on our list: Louisville and Notre Dame were hardly a glimmer in the eye of the ACC several years ago. Notre Dame, of course, isn’t a full member, but we’ve included the Irish here since men’s basketball is an ACC team and the football team by contract plays its fair share of ACC schools.

Semantics aside, with Duke football plus Louisville and Notre Dame in the fold, the ACC has assembled a solid group of football-basketball coaching duos.

Bitter Cold, Snow Will Hit Central NY Friday (PS; Sturz)

Our weather Friday will be cold and windy with snow to boot. Simply put, it might be a good day to stay inside if you can.

Bitter cold arctic air will continue to flood into Central New York Friday.

Wind chills close to 30 below at time, especially in the morning will make conditions miserable for anyone venturing outside.

The morning commute Friday won't be an easy one either. Northern Onondaga and Madison counties, as well as part of Oswego County, will likely be hit with between 4 and 6 inches of snow. Temperatures will be below zero early on too.

A wind chill warning was issued through late Friday morning for all of Central New York and the National Weather Service also issued a lake effect snow advisory for parts of the region.

We'll see more snow throughout the weekend. Temperatures will warm up, topping out in the mid 30s on Sunday before dropping down next week.

Shorter college games would mean less football, and that's bad (CBSSports: Dodd)

Sixty-eight commercials.

The next time you complain about sitting through a four-hour college football game, remember that TV has to get theirs. The average televised college game has an average of 68 30-second spots.

That's 34 minutes of "football" guaranteed before a ball is even snapped. You may not notice. If you have the right commercial-cutting recording device, you may not have to notice.

But that's the first thing to consider as college football games get longer. Those ads aren't going anywhere. The game is so popular on the front end (ratings) that it has to pay for itself on the back end (ad sales)...

Syracuse wants to re-establish run game (ESPN: Adelson)

When Syracuse opens spring practice Sunday, there will be an emphasis on getting back to its roots on offense.

That would be putting a priority on establishing the run.

Last season, the Orange were not nearly as effective on the ground. There were myriad reasons for that – the offensive line was never a cohesive unit as it dealt with one injury after another; injuries to the quarterbacks allowed defenses to load the box and key on the run; and offensive coordinator George McDonald favored more of a spread, high-tempo offense.

The shift in philosophy back to a pro-style, multiple-set under Tim Lester provides an opportunity to establish a more physical, powerful run game...

Former Syracuse OL Sean Hickey did not take part in on-field events at the NFL Combine due to a hamstring tweak: http://bit.ly/1AWefev

Hickey said the decision was mostly a precaution and that he'll participate in all events, including the bench, at SU's Pro Day on 3/26.

I saw Hickey do some on field events. I remember one where they said his hips were not real good.

I watched a little also... one of the last drills where all the guys were getting gassed. The commentator made some kind of snarky comment about Hickeys' performance, how the rabbit had turned into the tortoise. But then I also listened to co0mmentators conversation about being a RU grad and how great the Big Ten was this year.
