Not one buzzer beater and zero OT games. That is crazy. On top of that there is only one real Cinderella in the Sweet 16 (Ohio). But we had two 2 seed Ls after having four in history.

The state of Ohio has 3 teams in the S16, and it'll be 4 if UC wins.

and a whole crapload of hard-to-watch 62-57 type games.

these games are turning into wrestling matches with the way the refs allow so much contact now.

I blame Brad Stevens.

Yep. Stylistically, Butler/Big 10 basketball is so bad to watch.

I don't think they allow enough contact. Waaaay too much touch fouls. Do people really enjoy watching FT after FT? That IMO is a false way of inflating scores. There is nothing worse than seeing lulls in play. More fouls more lulls.

Outside of Syracuse and Marquette, most of the quality Big East teams towed the line of that style this year. Cincinnati, Notre Dame, South Florida, Louisville, Georgetown... lots of physical, low-tempo teams this year.

I love it, that's how basketball should be played IMO. We called our own fouls growing up and I never called a foul unless I was mugged. Touch fouls don't effect the play really, if I have a wide open lay up and someone grazes my body, that isn't a foul.

I think a foul should only be called if it affects the offended player negatively. If you touch them, & it changes their shot, they lose possession, or it physically harms them, then & ONLY then should a foul be considered.

This whole, calling a foul for the sake of following the letter of the law, ignores the spirit of why you have the law, to ensure a fairly played game. It's hardly fair to call a foul on a touch that has no effect on the play, but it endangers one player's eligibility in the game...

Butler made two consecutive championship games as a mid-major, not a shock that programs are trending towards their style of play.

It's like the neutral zone trap in hockey - it was fine back in the mid-90s when the Devils played that style, because they had the talent to do something with the puck once they got it.
Then talentless teams figured out that it was a way for them to stay in games and maybe a miracle would happen and they'd get a goal and win. Which is why they made rule changes, the game was becoming unwatchable.

Syracuse tries to turn teams over to get transition baskets. These teams try to turn you over so they can walk up the court and milk another 30 seconds off the clock. It's unwatchable. The NCAA needs to go to a 30 second shot clock, just to pick up the pace a little bit and negate the stall-ball tactic's effectiveness

We've had some "we coulda beat you at the buzzer but we screwed up" games.

The tempo around college basketball has slowed down each of the past couple seasons. So you're right about that.

at least we wont be stuck with vcu-butler for the right to be kept at arms length by storz or any other big boy program.

last year was the absolute worst. basically a couple of CYO teams squaring off to play St Raymonds for the state title.

Oh Lord

Excellent analogy to the neutral zone trap problem in hockey. I would also add in the apparent decline in the overall shooting talent of players today versus the past as contibuting to the lower scores.

it's funny . . . for all the talk after the two 15 over 2 upsets about how the gap between the big guys and the little guys has narrowed, this sweet 16 is filled with mostly familiar faces

7 of the remaining participants have been in 3 of the last 4 sweet 16s:
Kentucky (3 straight)
Ohio St. (3 straight)
Kansas
Michigan St.
North Carolina
Syracuse
Xavier

then you have Louisville, Baylor, Florida and Marquette who have been in 2 of the last 4

a lot of very familiar faces in this bunch

The idea with calling the touch fouls is that the teams should eventually stop doing it so much; but i do agree the game seems to be getting uglier every year. Which is annoying because the NBA game seems to be getting better every eyar.

30 second shot clock, great call, would love to see that. these games are just too low scoring. and i can almost guarantee the final score thursday nite will be in the 50s thanks to wisconsin.

I think people are overreacting to the low(er) scores. If you look at the historical national trends in college basketball, these things really are cyclical. For instance: scoring was at its all-time high in the 1970s, interestingly, before the advent of the shot-clock. Like Major League Baseball, scoring goes through cycles in college basketball. Changing the rules seems like an overreaction to a cycle.

I've never understood why basketball doesn't have the same rules at every level. The same three point line. Divide it into quarters. Let's play games of the same length. And the shot clock should be the same as well.

Friday was one of if not the craziest day in tournament history imo. Just for the fact that 2 15 seeds won after happening only 4 times in history and then add Ohio knocking off Michigan.
