Below is the complete text of a Big East basketball release issued this afternoon.
Don't we have a game on Saturday?
Don't we have a better record than Louisville or Marquette?
Aren't we higher ranked than Louisville or Marquette?
Marquette Streaks To 8-0 Start
In the preseason, the prognosticators felt Marquette was headed for another solid season. The Golden Eagles were ranked in the preseason polls and were picked sixth in the BIG EAST coaches’ poll. And, so far, they’ve been better. The Golden Eagles are 8-0 and ranked 11th this week in both major polls. Coach Buzz Williams’ club is coming off a 79-77 win over Washington Tuesday in the Jimmy V Classic. Forward Jae Crowder hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to give MU the win. Last Saturday, Marquette won at No. 7 Wisconsin 61-54. Guard Darius Johnson-Odom has sparkled throughout the early season, averaging 19.9 points per game.
Louisville Also Has Started 8-0 Despite Injuries
Expectations also were high at Louisville before the season began. The Cardinals were a preseason top 10 team, so their 8-0 start should not be surprising. What is surprising, however, is that the Cardinals are unbeaten, despite an inordinate amount of injuries. Coach Rick Pitino has kept his team on the winning track despite an ankle injury to standout guard Peyton Siva. Also, forward Mike Marra is lost for the season. Forward Wayne Blackshear is out indefinitely. Forward Rakeem Buckles just returned from an ACL injury suffered last year. Center Stephan Van Treese is out with a knee injury and guard Elisha Justice has a facial injury.
Keep It On ESPN2 Thursday, Saturday
All of the BIG EAST’s national television appearances will be on ESPN2 for the next few days. ESPN2 has two games on Thursday night and four on Saturday. The schedule (all times are Eastern):
Thursday Harvard at Connecticut 7:00
West Virginia vs. Kansas State 9:00
Saturday Cincinnati at Xavier 12:30
Pittsburgh vs. Oklahoma State 2:30
Villanova at Temple 5:00
Miami (Fla.) at West Virginia 7:00
