Starting with the return of the prodigals son, Fabrico Paulino de Melo. To the Super Bowl victory by the Giants featuring our very own future Hall of Famer Tom Coughlin.
After undergoing several weeks of uncertainty, the Syracuse University basketball team got a shot of adrenaline and the tonic for it's ill's with the announcement that Fab Melo would return to the hardwood. Scoop Jardine said, “He’s our anchor, as you can see, we’re a totally different team when he’s on the floor with us.”
Dion Waiters, who's game may have suffered the most without the seven foot centers picks on offense and security blanket defense reemerged after a three game hiatus. He shot 40% from three and 56% from the field, had 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and a throw down dunk for the ages.
Dion said this of Fab “It’s good to have him back,” “We feel like we got our brother back. We lost him for two or three games, but he’s back and better than ever now.”
Michael Carter-Williams had the game of his young career making five of his six field goal attempts, 3 of his 4 three-point tries, grabbed 4 precious rebounds dished out 3 assists and had a put down, play of the day dunk over a St. John's defender in the open court. Dion said, “It got me hyped,” “Just to see him to do (that), have fun out there, and have one of his best games, it’s great.”
After an embarrassing showing on the boards against West Virginia where the Mountaineers held a 40-21 rebounding advantage, 18-5 on the offensive side. SU bounced back against the smaller Johnnies gaining an overall advantage of 42-31 and 16-13 on the O-boards.
Kris Joseph & Rakeem Christmas coming alive with 8 & 7 respectfully. The guards who had one total rebound against West Virginia accounted for 29% of the boards with 12 rebounds Saturday afternoon.
JB commented, "We just went after it a little bit better," "St. John's is not big — that helps. I just thought we had a little bit better effort going to the glass."“I thought we did a better job on the boards than we had been,” On Kris Joseph, "He got on the boards, got a couple offensive-rebound baskets.”
It was good to hear that a good portion of the weeks practices were devoted to rebounding. Rakeem Christmas said, “We just needed to go get rebounds,” “Other teams are out rebounding us, and coach Boeheim doesn't’like that. Hop had us all week on the rebounding machine and that had us focused.”
The fact that the Syracuse Nation took over it's home-away-from-home, Madison Square Garden was a thorn in the side of the few devoted St. John's fans in attendance. They expressed their displeasure at the game and on message boards. They were perturbed to see SU fans in their season ticket areas. They even witnessed several in the student section who had snuck in with red shirts on, wearing Orange underneath. By most accounts the ratio was 5-1 SU Orangemen fans to Redmen (or the PC Red Storm) fans.
This was not unnoticed by the players, Waiters said, “Hey, it’s Orange Nation wherever we go. This crowd was into it. Now that's fun." Kris Joseph said, “We love playing here,” “It’s fun playing here. Our fans always come out and support. I always feel like our fans overpower the St. John’s fans. I feel like I didn’t hear them all game. When Cuse Nation is in the building, that’s a good sign.
Let's hope there are no other negative surprises for us the rest of the season. Hopefully we stay intact and give the post season our best shot fully armed.
Then on Sunday we had another proud to be Syracuse moment when the often maligned Tom Coughlin led the Giants to another classic Super Bowl victory over the Tom Brady bunch.
Back in 2007 it was David Tyree who offered Syracuse fans a puff out the chest catch, which will be forever rewound for generations to come.
Through every adversity Coughlin led the G-Men through a 5-7 start to Super Bowl champs. There were calls for his head but Giant ownership, thank goodness, knew better.
Oh sure there were breaks along the way including the 49'ers being without their best return man and having his replacement cough up the ball twice to open the door for victory and a shot at the Pat's.
However, New York was delivered several body blows as the Super Bowl progressed. First losing a starting tight end and then losing the other. A couple of key defensive players were hurt, one didn't return. There were the wasted timeouts, only one was left for the last 9 minutes or so. Yet, somehow, through all of that, Tom remained calm and led the Giants to a Super Bowl championship.
Proud weekend for all Syracuse fans.
