Wondering though does the player have to transfer out? Can the coaches force that? I know scholarships have always been 1 year at a time, but at least pre-portal era, a kid was recruited and offered a full ride for 4 years (focusing on football/basketball).  Pulling a kid’s scholarship within those 4 years for underperformance was unheard of.   Is that still the case or do coaches only promise a year now when they recruit a kid?

Could the player push back and tell the coach something like, “Look, I get I’m not in your plans, you don’t think I can play at this level, are going recruit over me, etc…but I still want to come back”?
