What bugs me the most about this offense...

Our offense is literally a pick and roll. And no team is dumb enough to leave Kyle anymore. We were getting all those lobs against the real garbage comp, now everyone has caught on.

Yeah, I fear there are going to be important games we need to win that will come down to coaching, switching things up and running and executing some designed plays on O to exploit what the opposing defense is taking away on our playground offense.

This was always going to be big litmus test this year for Red once the talent was upgraded. Can he coach to get wins when it counts and we can't win on talent alone??

Not seeing that yet and (it may be a bridge too far), but here's hoping he figures it out...

I’ve recently watched some older Cuse games on YouTube. I used to complain about Boeheim not running much offense, but watching these older games, they ran a lot more than just a high screen for the point guard at top of the key. We ran a lot more screens for wing players making curls. We rotated post players and actually posted up occasionally. Usually had two players in motion at all times actually moving with a purpose rather than just going through the motion.

Not really sure these were designed plays, but the motion kept the defense on their toes and we seem to get a lot better shots. Now it seems like we have four guys who want to stand on the perimeter and one guy to come up and set a high pick. Players on the wing rather than moving tend to try to float around the three-point line. We seem to take a lot of contested shots and light in the shock clock three pointers and when we miss, we have one guy against four trying to get a rebound

Driving and attacking the hoop or dishing are a primary part of all of JJ's, George's and Kingz' games.
JJ drives the most of these 3. None of these 3, however, can dish.

more concerned about our three point shooting or lack thereof than the boarding right now. donnie freeman fixes the rebounding. who is gonna fix the deep threat ?

Our players always take ill-advised shots with nobody around the basket or cutting to the basket. We will never have a chance at offensive rebounds because we don't even try. This team's ceiling is limited to being a bubble team because we're just a mess in the halfcourt. That's on red and it should spell the end of his tenure.
You should have this titled as “most about when we are on offense” because we don’t have “this offense” as that implies we have a system we are running in the first place, no?

SU got killed on the boards the first half of the first half. Out rebounded by 10 at one point but cut the deficit to 3 by halftime. In the second half they had evened things up and then AA had them try to play a zone and St. Joe’s rebounded every one of their misses. I think they had 4 offensive rebounds on one possession while the SU goes ran around like crazy. And it just kept getting worse. No more zone please except just maybe one possession here or there every third game.
To me it seemed like Red treated the whole game like a scrimmage. From rotations to zone.

All I liked was sitting White for Betsey who had the hot hand

This offense works great if you have a dangerous pick-and-role duo surrounded by amazing shooters. We tried that a few years ago, and it did work great. Unfortunately, those same guys were so damn slow that they got blown off the court on defense. Now we are trying to do the opposite - we have the athletes for defense but haven't shown a lot in pick-and-role success or shooting. Until George becomes more of a threat on offense, Donnie returns, and we start knocking down shots from deep, it's going to be a slog.

Long story short - this offense and defense would be unstoppable if we could recruit at the level we used to.

There’s a lot of what ifs here today.

Monmouth and St Joes “our scares” but yet we had 10 point leads in both with 2 mins left despite all the problems we have.

The only team we’ve been crushed by is projected as a 1 seed, the other teams we lost to are projected to be a 3 and a 4 seed in the tourney with an OT in there. All in 40 hours in Vegas.

Autry should be scrutinized but also I’m here watching games thinking until they lose to a team they shouldn’t are we really that upset. I agree about all the things you guys are talking about that need fixing for what it’s worth.

The fact that teams have to look out for Kyle means they aren't able to hedge properly on the ball handler. We are getting way more clean lines to the basket because Kyle is a threat to catch the lob and put somebody in a highlight reel.

Our offense relies on dribbling and we don't have anyone with a tight handle on the team.

In theory we should. But our penetration is few and far between.

Yeah not saying they should exclusively do that but having a 5 set the screen who you have to respect on the roll does have value. Might even be more effective with a ball handler who could let it fly if the defenders dropped to worry about the roll

We’ve usually had guys who could come off the screen, square up and shoot. Gmac, Andy, Buddy, JG3, etc

I agree that we should run some more action. But All our three-point shooters seem to be standstill shooters, not guys who can shoot off of a screen.

But your point stands that our offense is too one dimensional. Kyle does not really bully people in the paint, but he is crafty and patient. We could at least play inside out a few times through him.

Agreed.

Those half court offensive concepts are integral for most teams generating quality shot attempts. We do very little of that.

Beyond high ball screens, and a nomial P&R.

Coaching, IMO. The "concept" seems to be: there isn't one. Generate defensive pressure to potentially get easy scoring opportunities in transition, and hope that Betsey, Kingz, or Kiyan is hot from outside. But not much about doing the little things you reference above, 007.
It’s like the coaches spent this last offseason going to defensive coaching class but didn’t have time for the offense. I guess this next off season is time for offensive coaching clinics?

While offense is more fun… the solid D gives the team a much higher floor. It would have been nice to have a coaching staff who didn’t have to learn both offense and defense on the clock, but here we are.

I watched a little bit of UConn/Texas last night. UConn is so good at creating easy looks with their motion offense and crisp sets. Like it doesn't matter for them if "we're making shots" because the shots they get are so high percentage.

Whereas with us, for the past decade minimum, it feels like our players are playing five individual one on one games on the court at a time.

I learned that when a shot went up, I should head toward the hoop and box out. What I am seeing is that nobody heads toward the hoop; they must think that all shots are going to be good and there will be no rebound.
that is pretty much the issue with our rebounding. Unless they are in the lane they make no attempt to get into the lane.

UConn doesn’t dribble much or rely on Isolation at all. Hurley also hired Murray to be his OC because his early teams there very much looked like us now.

That’s why I said we should make a play for Murray as next HC.

I think it has to do with the offensive 'scheme' .. 4 out, 5 out sets with high ball screens.. shooters in the wings/corners so if we can get into the lane, it opens the outside. Devo talked about it quite a bit last night about getting into the lane & then looking for shooters.

SU also likes to run some 'zoom' action sets with dribble drive handoffs & off ball screens, so guys are positioned around the 3 pt line.
We dont have "shooters" so this is a bad strategy
