I haven’t been on this board much for obvious reasons, so this may have been discussed before. But I can’t help but wonder, Carmelo over the years has put his all in the Syracuse community and basketball program. And he has given us his only begotten son. And I’m sure many of you saw his horrified face several times during our time in Las Vegas. Does he have major regrets? Do you think on the down low he may be offering Red some help? He seems to be the epitome of positive determination. Might he ride to our rescue and, if so, what might he do? Asking for a friend.

That's exactly why I had doubts that Kiyan would attend Syracuse. Didn't Melo see the problem last year?

Melo's no dummy. He's seen Kiyan's highs and Kiyan's lows. It's not a case where Kiyan should be averaging 35mpg. He's a freshman and needs to get stronger and smarter. Like a lot of freshman.

We all had horrified faces. They did some good things in Vegas and also 30 minutes of exhausted play where they got slaughtered. All without our "best" player. Which gave guys like Saddiq White and Tyler Betsey more playing time.

The season really starts when Donnie comes back. Right now, the team is probably not good enough to have a next man up philosophy. Hopefully Donnie is back vs. Tennessee.

As far as whether Melo is helping Red down low. A lot of coaches are arrogant, but they still have their guys they talk to. Red is far from arrogant, so you know he has to be talking to JAB, maybe Hop, maybe Gerry, maybe Seth Greenberg. And probably Melo. I'm sure they have spent a decent amount of time together the last couple of years.

How much input will/would Melo have in hiring a new coach?
It will be directly proportional to the amount of NIL he is willing to contribute. Not saying that's right or good for the program, but that's what drives the bus now.

In the current NCAA, its much easier for a player to fix their situation after a season is done.
Probably helped with the decision.

This season sure took a turn quickly. If things don't get a lot better and Red gets fired, if I were a betting man, I'd say Kiyan stays put. It doesn't seem like transferring from Cuse would be a very good look.

Would it be that terrible a look for Kiyan? It would probably be a worse look for the status of Syracuse basketball though, as this transfer might make the news cycle for a few days.

How many juniors and seniors get drafted after transferring now. Quite a few. In the current NCAA not much of a stigma to a player that transferred.

That's not who I was referring to. I dont' think it matters at all to Kiyan in terms of how it would look. However, for his pop, having his son transfer out of cuse would be sad for everyone involved. Melo loves cuse and that's obvious. That said, we just need to get it going beginning tomorrow night.

Melo is no dummy …. He knows this administration was cooked when Kiyan committed. You can see Kiyan has a ton of skills and IQdespite maybe not being that good athletically. He doesn’t need his college coach to get him better - he has plenty of resources to do that on his own. The chance for a fairytale was probably worth it in itself for Melo/Kiyan. Realistically, Kiyan is obviously good enough to play at this level - but as a freshman, he wouldn’t get much time on a top 25 team this year. The leash he’s gotten for a freshman is pretty incredible too - Red has given him a ton of iso chances and puts the ball in his hand a lot, especially for a freshman

At this point I'd take anyone but Red. Carmelo could be the perfect fit as coach for Syracuse. Aside from the fact it would keep Kiyan in the fold through his senior year, he’s a national champ, a program legend and his name alone would get recruits to pick up the phone. Melo brings instant credibility, swagger and the culture this program has been missing. He spent 2 decades in the NBA learning from Hall of Fame coaches and playing alongside legends. Don’t tell me he hasn’t picked up enough to run a college team. Melo IS Syracuse. If you want juice, recruiting power and a shot of adrenaline then hand him the keys.
BUT - does he want to be a coach and can he coach? He has a pretty good life right now with a lot of business interests.

[Maybe make him GM and have him bring in GMac to do the nitty gritty coaching. ]

Patrick Ewing was the perfect fit for Georgetown too.

I love Carmelo and will be forever grateful for what he did and continues to do for my favorite team. That said, there's no way in hell he should even be considered for HC. When the time comes, we need to make a substance (e.g., Ben McCollum) over style (e.g., Deion) hire. 'Melo should have input into that hopefully substantive hire. No question.

I'm sort of blown away that anyone would even suggest Melo as coach right now. That said, I think he could offer valuable input on the decision. However, I'm still holding out hope that we can win tonight and get our season back on track. I think it's very possible.

He cousin keeps pushing Melo as the next coach, but he doesn't watch basketball much. I'd guess that almost all casual Cuse fans want Melo. That's not to say that everyone who wants Melo is a casual fan.

I was going to say that Kiyan has potential but he is in a 3pt shooting slump which can be easily corrected by stay away from shooting 3s. He really has not proved himself to be a consistent scorer. He needs to concentrate on scoring instead of bombing away from beyond the 3 point line.
