where has it gone? We attacked teams off the dribble all season long and now over the past couple of weeks our 3 guards are not even looking to get to the hoop. They and Joseph are just parking themselves on the 3 point line.

It's become a 3 point shooting offense and we're a horrible shooting team.

When teams are laying off, playing you to drive, it certainly is more difficult. Let's face it. No one is afraid of us making outside shots.

Enter Big Game James.

Lets hope JSouth goes for a Gmac 03 NCG first half and gets these teams to start respecting the threat of the three point bucket.

To my eyes is doesn't seem like teams are packing it in though. They're challenging shooters. We could've attacked that zone all day long yesterday off the dribble and we didn't. Same thing against Cincy to.

We got better yesterday as we attacked the zone.

Teams are packing it in against us and our bigs aren't clearing the lane. Baye is too weak and Rak is too soft.

Brandon had a couple of nice drives but hit a brick wall of defenders.

The book on how to defend SU has been out there for awhile now and everyone is using it.

I think this is true but then you make an adjustment to change the tempo of the game. We pretty much let UNCA dictate the tempo of the game throughout allowing them to set up their defense like they did.

Yeah, what Dick said and their help was very good. They had a big rotate to cut off drives quite often. They were protecting the paint pretty well. Hello floaters?

Sherman Douglas isn't walking through that door.

One advantage of making it to this point is now people might be more hesitant to change. It's kind of late for KState to change. They have built all season long one kind of defensive identity. I doubt they throw out a zone on us. Wisky plays one way, and it is unlikely to change if we meet.

I agree with the OP and we need our guards to attack. Once in they can go to the rack if there, maybe pull up for a 10-12 footer, or find CJ (if he comes back) for that 10-12 or JS for an open 3. Good things happen on the dribble drive.
It was weird that it seemed like our guards could not get that initial step on the UNCA guards.

So much for the diea that they were going to "run with us". Nobody is, unless they also have the athletes we have.

Halfway through the season we became very effective bringing Fab out high to ser a screen and it would bring Fab's defender out high with him. The guard would then drive to the other side of Fab that Fab's defender was not favoring. Very effective. Have not seen it for a few games. Not sure if it would still work without Fab as far as the defending center coming out.

Guys are not stepping out with Baye or RAK. As the poster above said, when the second defender slides over we either aren't making the pull-up jumper, or our bigs are not getting in good position to receive the ball. I think it's both.

The point about Fair is a good one. A few games back, we were very effective at drive and dish to Fair. Not sure why that wasn't working yesterday, other than early foul trouble for Fair took him out for a while. And maybe we just got away from it.

Weren't they initially jumping the ball handler as he came across the half court line. Unless I'm thinking about one of the many other games I watched yesterday I felt like there were lots of opportunities to quickly get the ball to the foul line area and have 3 offensive players against two defensive. Instead we seemed very passive/tentative about getting the ball across half court and starting our offense.

It is amazing how easy it is to upset the delicate balance of a high performing offense.

Because frankly, it is amazing that we were scoring like we were early in the season when you consider that we basically had no reliable inside game, and a team of good-not-great jump shooters. When we were firing on all cylinders, the defense was translating into offense by giving us easy scoring opportunities in transition, the penetration was setting up shooters on the wing to get them better looks, we were getting a bunch of stuff mid-range from the likes of Brandon / Dion / CJ, and we were getting quasi-inside scoring from Fab [mostly by him running the floor].

We aren't a good enough team to take away multiple of those elements offensively and continue to win--but that's exactly what seems to have happened. And when we don't do all of those things well, we become one dimensional and very easy to defend.

Actually, I think it's the opposite. Guys are stepping out even further with Rak and Baye in the game, because they realize that they pose no threat way out there. Double the man with the ball and leave Rak or Bye open. It's not going to hurt you on D.

We should have Southerland setting picks b/c he 's a real threat to shoot from there. I feel like most of our picks are half-hearted-people usually go right through them. We need to set better picks and get to the basket. Even if we miss the shot, if opens up the offensive boards for easy putbacks.

OSU fans are going to learn all about dribble penetration and Bees is going to teach them. Like a boss

I like Southerland in that high post area, too. Teams that carve up our zone have guys in that spot who are triple threats. Not saying that Southerland is a huge threat to drive, but he sure is a threat to make that shot, and he shows a willingness to pass it into the post if the defender comes out.

Would love to see Southerland in that role, and force the defense to account for him.

Shhhhhh Don't Tell Anyone...

I agree the one SINGLE thing done correctly yesterday is Southerland at the foul line area. What bothers me is why hasn't he been there all year?

JB THIS IS HOW THE CURRENT TEAM BEATS A ZONE! AMAZING WE PLAY ZONE EXCLUSIVELY BUT WE DON'T KNOW HOW TO BEAT IT CONSISTENTLY??

OK someone send this message to JB:
MCW IS POINT, HOT SHOOTER: EITHER TRICHE, DION OR JOSEPH AT THE TWO GUARD, SOUTHY AT THE FOUL LINE,
If CJ playing well, he should roam the baseline and if Southy doesn't shoot it CJ should get a pick from christmas for a baseline jump shot. if Southy has space he dribbles once or twice and lobs or bounce passes to either the 4/5. If this lineup practiced these plays there is no way we don't blow that team out yesterday.

You have a 6'5 point guard with great vision and passing ability in MCW and with Southy you have a 6'8 point forward. BUT WE CAN'T FIND SHOTS and we can't find shots. It's truly amazing to me that after JB has watched teams methodically tear apart the zone from the foul line pivot point for 10-12 years. But we only use this tactic for like 1/6 of the game?

This should be practiced every week. If you have guys hitting the three then you use CJ at the foul line as a pivot to look at perimeter as well. in that case rather Southy takes mid range it alley oop lob.

Calhoun would drop a hundo on our zone with our roster. All of our mid range shooting ability from guys 6'7-6'8" its pathetic and scary IMO because you can just tell there is no comfort which you would see if you ran these plays 5,000 times a year in practice.

Can anyone explain what they do in practice? I'm guessing they launch a lot of threes. JB teams should crush EVERY ZONE INSIDE OUT, IT'S CALLED PRACTICE!

If Brandon and/or Scoop could hit a couple to start a game..it would do wonders. I realize this rarely ever happens... but, I can dream.
