time for cooney and coleman iunvaluable.oy got good coleman is going to be good this year. souths long range shooting was reminiscent of len bias. he rebounds better, he a lottery pick. triche finally csme round and cw is the best player in the country.
not good fouls. jb needs a tutor on two three. love his offense and the guys have defensive aptitudes but its embarrassing

Yawn. Why do you even waste the time? Everyone knows what you are going to say. And it usually borders on ridiculous. I agree though, a coach closing in on 900 wins IS embarrassing...

Len Bias, James? You remember a very different Len Bias than I do.

Of course James is a lottery pick. NBA scouts love 5th year senior swing men with zero ability to handle the ball.

Len Bias was 3 for 11 in his career at MD for a whopping 27% average. Additionally all 11 of his attempts were made his freshman year. After that Lefty wisely told him to stop taking 3's.

Not James Southerland

Was there even a 3pt line in college when Bias played? I'm thinking no.

My brain may be addled with age but I think Bias graduated/died before my sophomore year ('84-'85) and the 3pt rule in college was instituted for the '85-'86 season. Am I wrong?

Bias was drafted in '86.

If southerland had a slight tint of white under his right nostril during the game, then I would agree with the bias comparison.

I thought Bias died because he had never done it before and had some sort of crazy reaction. Who knows guess I'm lucky that I'm not alergic to any of that stuff.

No no no no no no no.

Yes, he is an excellent standstill catch-and-shoot player. And he can jump. But his NBA skills stop there. He cannot dribble or defend to save his life.

I think he meant with his fine academics he will be working for the lottery system in a management capacity. James can make a living as a stand still 3 point specialist in Europe, maybe. No handle. I wonder if he was just late to the game and never picked it up. To be fair, he may get a look at the NBA as a specialist, if he can rebound/defend a bit. Novak, Korver, Hoiberg, etc., started in the league and have held on as shooters, though Korver is a little better than just a shooter.
Igor is right about the Bias comparisons, given how long Len has been dead. They have the same handle as we speak.

Southerland can't defend?

Dean Smith said Len Bias was the best player he ever saw.

Jest give us the mother f;$;$ing trophy!

at the NBA level on the perimeter as a 2 or 3 is the ?

do we really know if he can defend? I agree that he isn't very physical, and that may be a problem. but he has ideal height and he is a good run\jump athlete. I don't necessarily think he can't competently defend at an nba level. I think he has a chance to make it as a poor man's james posey type. Odds are against him but it's possible.

Southerland can't defend?

If someone drives baseline on him its an automatic foul, every time. Instead of attempting to recover and beat them to a spot, he reaches and gets whistled. Sure he'll block a few shots off the weak side, but he'd be a huge liability in m2m.

Posey was a terrific defensive player and can dribble. So aside from being "athletic" (which everyone in the nba is), there's no comparison.

Next game (against a real opponent), just watch him try to defend in a one-on-one situation. All he does is reach.

You are right in that Posey was a far better all around player - much more physical\better rebounder. That said I think South is a better natural shooter (though Posey did hit some absolute daggers in the 08 finals), and I'm still not convinced he can't defend. Based on his size and athleticism he SHOULD be able to defend. And we've never seen him in a M2M so who knows. For South to make a roster though he needs to prove that he is an absolute lights out Novak like shooter which until this year he hasn't been.

James growth this year is nothing short of sensational. It's hard to believe...and I can't fully believe until I see this for several more games. He's got confidence. He does a nice job on D. His handle is better. His athleticism is that of pros. Gotta think that scouts will want to see more of him. Can't see him getting to the NBA but stranger things have happened. He never would have made a three in a big game on the road before...now he makes 9. Don't wake him up!
