...of The Shot and The Turnover is that we allowed ourselves to get down 14, after leading by 10. We allowed Pitt to go on a 31-10 run to take control of the game. What was that?

Sucks that we dug such a big hole, because this was a winnable game, and went down to the wire. If we hadn't been down so much, we win going away.

And that decisive stretch from about the last 5 minutes of the first half until about 7 minutes remaining in the second half sunk us.

we had a similar stretch agaisnt fsu. we went from up 7 to down 7 in like 5 minutes of game time.

The loss was mostly due to empty possessions caused by errant passes, sloppy catches, and -- most of all -- failure to control the ball in free-ball situations. So many of those that it's hard to blame either Cooney or Howard for one bad play at the end. I've never seen a big interior guy have as many balls taken away from him over the course of the season as does DC2.

Anecdote coming: While at San Jose State many many years ago, Harry Edwards (yes, THE Dr. Harry Edwards) was our 6-8 center on the basketball team. He and two opposing players grabbed one rebound and, with six hands firmly on the ball, Harry raised the ball up and took both other players with him! That's what I'm lookin' for here.-VBOF

It's unfortunate that there is a rule that only allows pressing when you are down 8 or more with 2 minutes or less left in the game. Otherwise perhaps we could try to shake up the game tempo during times in the first or second half when the other team goes on a run by destroying the zone.

We should try to get that rule changed.

Honest to God.

This team is so flawed with its structure and strategy, and Dixon just owns JB, that the stretch you are talking about isn't surprising at all.

G is a wing that plays PG.
Mal is a better 2G than Cooney, but he's stuck playing the 3.
Lydon plays center at times.

We are committed to the zone. We'll press to a wide variety of results when we are down. We can't shoot FTs well. Our offense is not sophisticated.

This is all besides the fact that we have limited scholarships due to probation.

Today's game is a symptom of a larger issue.

What happened is...this team has a lot of deficiencies. Bad defense. Too many turnovers.

I had to work today and set the DVR but I have the discipline of a 2 year old so I couldn't avoid finding out the score. Maybe I'll just fast forward through that stretch to save my mental health.

...and then right back to the zone the second we tie it up. Why?

I hear you, but that point after the expenditure of energy and risk, I didn't expect JB to become Nolan Richardson. I can see where you're coming from though, and am wondering just how often that would have had similar results if it had been employed more this season.

Yeah the "why" was rhetorical...I know "why" :)

We have the athletes to press in short bursts. It's amazing trunk monkey is effective at all because it is so undisciplined. It says more about how ineffective Pitt really is when they're not allowed to play against their favorite defense. JB himself has said his press only works against bad teams, and that's usually the case. But I've seen enough to believe that we could be quite disruptive using a smart 2-2-1 press and would love to see Hopkins explore that idea proactively. Time to flip the narrative. Feels like Woody Hayes is coaching this program right now.

Press? God no! That would mean changing things up just a little. We are the most predictable basketball team in the country and I don't think it's even close. Commentators talk about preparing for the 2-3 zone, but honestly, is there any team easier to prepare for offensively and defensively than Cuse?

Hate to be a stickler but it was a 34-10 run

It is amazing to me that every team we play seems to have multiple guys that can shot 80% from that 10 to 15 foot in the lane "sweet spot" in the zone.

I kind of feel like if you cleared out the whole lane and gave us that shot unmolested we don't have more than one guy that could confidently hit the shot at a high rate, yet every team we play seems to have multiple guys that can do it. Why is that?

This game was a carbon copy of the Louisville game a month ago. We had a double digit lead and shut them down the first 10 minutes. We melted down to end the half and start the 2nd half. Only difference we came back today and made it a close game.

We are stagnant and don't tend to make adjustments. We run the same defense and same offense every play. If the opponents out plays us we are in trouble.
