What's with the double screen BS?

I feel like the game turned right around that time. I completely blame ESPN for this loss.

On a serious note, it was blatantly disrespectful. They stopped calling the action on the court for at least 5 minutes to play up their rivalrly angle, while double screening and even cutting away to the empty Dean Dome! Ridiculous.

Super annoying. However, if us and L'ville had better teams they probably would have put more attention on our game. From ESPN's perspective, they're broadcasting a decent team that's not eligible for the post season against a mediocre team on/near the bubble. Add the fact that it's only kind of a rivalry and you realize ESPN wasn't working with much. I'm not saying it was right, but I can see why they did it.

cutting to talking heads in a sea of pale blue while gameplay was going on was flat out bush league. ESPN just took overhyping to a new level, which they already achieved in overhyping this game all week

Really got on my nerves, too. I was going to make a thread about this. Disrespectful is right, OrangeDW. Before our game they hyped the Duke/NC game for half an hour and never mentioned the Cuse or Ville. The split screen BS for 5 min. was horrible, then halftime was nearly all NC/Duke hype x2. Total bush league by espn. But that split screen had my blood boiling. Amateurs.

It's 2 of the top basketball programs in the country over like the last 40 years, both with large followings. They treated it like it was a scrub game. Completely uncalled for. They could've saved it for halftime.

They weren't saying anything of importance or interest anyway. Some idiot rambling about how Johnny Damon played for both the Red Sox and Yankees so it can't be as good as a college rivalry, then some other idiot bringing up Lakers-Celtics from the 80's...Jeez. Felt like a bad segment of Around the Horn or one of those other shows where the idiots scream back and forth at each other to force a stupid argument/discussion.

Isn't this what halftime is for?

This segment did not appeal to Louisville fans, Syracuse fans, college basketball fans (as nothing interesting was said) and probably even Duke/UNC fans who were watching this game (as no value was added)

NO matter who was playing, they showed complete disrespect for the teams playing with their continuous pumping of the Duke-UNC game. It could have been two D3 teams and if they were good enough to schedule for that time, then they should be good enough to concentrate on. If D/UNC is the ultimate rivalry, they why was it necessary to plug it so much. Does their marketing research indicate that they have to do that to draw/keep an audience?

Casual fans. Casual fans probably aren't going to mark Duke-UNC on their calendars but most would be into watching the game if they came across it. It's not necessarily a bad strategy to grab their attention during a game they'd typically flip right past.

My list of college basketball broadcast pet peeves
  • Missing game action to show the crowd cheering. If I was at the game, would I be staring at the crowd? Then why am I watching it now?
  • Going to split screen to talk about a game that HASN'T EVEN STARTED. That obviously just got added to my list last night. I was just livid. If they want to do that coming back from the commercial for 30 seconds - fine I can live it. But to go on for that long was just freaking ridiculous.
  • Bizarre camera angles - If I wouldn't want to be in the arena watching the game from that perspective, don't show it to me on tv.
  • Announcers who consistently misidentify players - We're all human so I can deal with a mistake. But not multiple mistakes throughout the game.
  • Not saying who a foul was on and how many fouls the guy has
There are probably more but that's just off the top of my head.

ESPN used to be a go to network for sports. Now it's becoming a near last resort.

Last night was as poor an example of professional broadcasting as I've ever witnessed. The producers/directors of that telecast should be made to go back to gopher status. The blatant disregard for our game was only exceeded by the babbling nannies at North Carolina.

If ESPN doesn't realize how disrespectful our game was treated, they need to be ashamed of themselves. While we may have been the lesser interest on a national scale to the "Two Blue" game, we still should have been at given our own segment of time without the discourteous cut aways, graphics and drivel provided for the "other" game.

Not Bob Wischusen's finest hour on the play-by-play, either.

Not only was he number threeing all over Louisville's run in the second half, but he inexplicably referred to Syracuse as a "quote-unquote unranked team."

Uh, no, Bob, you don't need quotes. Syracuse is actually an unranked team. The numbers are right there next to the score.

Not updating you on the number of team fouls. I really think this should be a stat listed near the number of Time Outs remaining.

Presumably the people who tune in to the SU v. Louisville game actually want to see the SU v. Louisville game, not a discussion about an upcoming game overlayed on the game they tuned in to see.

I've been thinking this all season. I would also like to see them add the number of fouls for individual players, or at least guys that have 2 or more fouls in the first half and three or more in the second half. They don't have to have it up constantly, but you would think they could find a way to cycle it up on the screen every few minutes or something.

Agreed. This info would be much more useful than the "My Top 5 Rivalry List" they put up. And why the hell did they someone Pick St. Mary's/Gonzaga over Syracuse/GTown. What.

I think they should have gone split screen during the Duke-UNC game to show the announcers for the SU Louisville game yak about what happened in that game.

It would have made about as much sense.

Add the split-screen annoyance to my beef about having to hear Vitale preach TO J. Van Gundy about the NBA for SIXTEEN STRAIGHT MINUTES during the 2nd half of last week's ND v. Miami game. They actually did not mention either ND or Miami during their blatant and unnecessary 16 min. NBA promotion. How do the fans, alumni, and families of those two teams feel? espn just plain sucks. Tney could have pushed the NBA for a couple of minutes at halftime. But noooooo....bush league if you ask me. I'll show myself out.

Make that a team not eligible that beat UNC against a mediocre team that beat Duke.

A lot of arena's have the # of fouls of who is on the floor at any one time for each team on the main score board. Makes sense to me to at least flash such a thing especially after a foul was committed. But of course they would then also have to recognize who is actually on the floor. How many times has a substitution been made whit out ESPN acknowledging it?
