Syracuse could potentially have 6 victories over major conference teams before the start of the conference schedule. Has there ever been the possibility of this happening? Yes, i will still count the new big east.

Minnesota - W
Cal - W
Baylor - W
Indiana - ?
Nova - ?
St johns - ?

Not sure Nova & St. John's are "major conference" teams any more.

Good conference? Sure... Very good in fact.

But not "major."

We left the BE because is was barely a major conference in fball and without fball you cannot be a major conference. The BE has no fball it is not a major conference and neither is the AA because they just aren't. I think the AA will fade drastically in hoop to be like the old conference USA. Then the BE and the A10 are going to be in serious competition for the east coast recruits not going to the ACC. Something will have to give between the BE and the A10 in hoops over the next 10-12 years.

Still the OP's point is very good. When was the last time we played that many NAME schools in bball.

Big East is still a major conference. American Athletic Conference not so much.

Time will tell. The Big East still has a sizable presence in most of the large cities in the North and East. If they can develop those markets and those teams, they will not go away.

So, the "Old Big East" wasn't a major conference from 1979-1991?

Different era altogether.

Sure, the Big East was a major conference in the 80s... I'll give you that.

But so what does that mean in 2013-14?

Nothing.

There's a reason the Big East and AAC have lousy TV deals compared to the ACC, B1G, PAC-12, Big 12, & SEC... It's because they aren't "major" in the truest sense of the word.

The point is that it's not "mid-major" in basketball. It may have a few mid-major quality teams but all major conferences do. It's a major conference.

What does football have to do with being a major basketball conference? The big east was considered the best basketball conference for something like 5 or 6 years in a row just a couple years ago. just because it was terrible in football didn't mean it wasn't a major conference in basketball.

The new Big East is still going to be a major conference. "Major" isn't about money, it's about the quality of the teams that are participating.

Good tv deal for them. Watching a bunch of new big east basketball on Fox1 this year.

Yeah, the big east has a fantastic TV deal for a basketball only conference. I think they're making about $3 to 4 million/yr per team. Fox wayyyy overpaid to get some content for FS1. They're going to have more than enough money to compete at a high level.
