He does it in the pocket when he hears footsteps, which causes him to not be able to see downfield. If you watch the replay of the hit Saturday, he drops his head when he sees the second tackler coming. That put his head right in the line of fire. I don't remember whether he was doing that last year before he got hurt or not. Might be because of all the head injuries he's had, or it might just be a natural instinct that he's always had.
