This might have been talked about already, not sure... but it seems like we are rarely in transition anymore. The past few years we really would get out and go. Now it's just terrible half court offense

Tough when you cant rebound on the defensive end which triggers transition offense. Tough when you are not forcing as many turnovers as you once were. Tough when you are forced to play a meat grinder type of game because with James out that is really our best chance to win (and its how we beat Louisville and Cincy).

are our steals down as well?

Non conference we were averaging 11.07 steals pergame
Conference games we are averaging 8.3 steals per game
Games since southerland has been out we are averaging 7.4 steals per game

Yes steals are down.

Waiting to become eligible.

You all make it seem like JS plays five positions at once. Will it help? You betch'em. But our guards haven't been great at forcing turnovers (leading to breaks) from opposing guards the past few games, IMO. The Triche to MCW alley oop was a thing of beauty and we need more plays like that.

The thing with JS is that even if he isn't shooting well, he's going to shoot, and he's going to shoot early in the shot clock. He took a lot of transition 3's, and he also seemed to get his hands on a lot of passes this year. It'll be nice to have him at the bottom of our zone again. Grant looks lost a lot of the time.

We're not looking to push off defensive rebounds as we have in recent years, though. Might have something to do with fewer ballhandlers on the court, but our rebounders go out of their way to look for the point guard, even if a quick outlet would give us numbers; in previous seasons, it was more "find anyone who can dribble, make the outlet, and go."

Only an observation but our defensive rebounding % has improved not just a bit, but a lot from last year -- certainly part of it is team makeup, but I wonder if a big part is strategy, Are the Orange sending more men to the defensive glass (including guards), thereby restricting the outlet passes to some degree.

That certainly contributes, too.

I originally thought this too except that our rebounding margin isn't that different from last year (except for the last 2 games where we got beat up badly). I think our transition game left with Scoop and Dion. They just ran it better than this year's crew.

we gotta try something... maybe extending our zone into a half court trap more often? Jim has done that very, very rarely this year, but solely when we are trying to come back
