Decided to dive into next year's roster and look at the best bets for scoring options. In doing so, I learned that Cooney and Gbinije finished this year even worse than I thought. Right now, it's hard to say who will provide a consistent scoring punch.

Haven't read the article yet, but McCullough's my answer.

Gbinije will have a big season and Cooney will have a more efficient season (less minutes). McCullough should be our go-to guy, though, if he comes back 100% and doesn't miss too many games.

McCullough is definitely the most talented player on the roster, IMO. Just depends on two things: 1) can he get strong enough to be able to finish through contact? 2) can he fully recover from his knee surgery and regain full confidence in that knee?

If we don't have dribble penetration again from our guards and creating/playmaking abilities from them then it will be a rough season again offensively. An area we are trending downwards for at least two seasons in a row now.

This is spot on. That's why we need Kaleb to improve significantly: his handle, strength and decisiveness all need to trend upward in a big way. I think he's more than capable and I know he will work his ass off. Cooney is Cooney, he won't get better. G should be very good, albeit maybe a little inconsistent. Malachi will help us with his shooting range and should be able to give Cooney some much-needed rest.

I think Gbinije will be the go to guy. Mccullough could become it over time but not starting the season, he doesn't have the iso game yet, Gbinije brought one all season.

imo, We need Kaleb to make a jump, so gbinije can back up cooney at off guard and play the three instead. Would rather see Ron or Howard play back up point.

The talent will be there, but we got to get joseph gbinije, cooney, malachi, roberson, mccullough, bj patterson howard, and possibly diagne out there together between 4 positions, that will be no easy task. Then we got to figure out how the ball will move in that lineup. If gbinije is playing point I would like to see joseph not cooney next to him so its kind of like hes playing sg some possessions.

Why no mention of Roberson ? He was improving rapidly. I like the form on his J & think he will start get more confident & make that shot next season. No reason he can't average 12 to 15. The thing I like about Tyler's game is that he will probably be more consistant than most others within his scoring range.

All of the frosh will be wild cards. Probably lot's of up & down games from each of them. If one or two; however, can provide a steady 6 to 8 off the bench that would be a huge boost.

Coleman is another wild card. Rust could be a problem, but if he is 100% healthy maybe he can develop into that horse in the middle that we all envisioned when he signed up. If he can replace 10 to 12 of Rak's 15 that would be huge.

I don't think Offense will be a problem, If G comes back, his offensive game keeps improving, I think Roberson will be a beast next year, If Malachi is as good as advertised, and Cooney becomes more consistent, it just comes down to getting something out the center position.

Who didn't mention Roberson? Because in the thing I wrote and then linked, I spent a full paragraph talking about Roberson. See? Here's the paragraph in question:

"That brings us to Roberson, the talented but seemingly timid sophomore who quietly became one of the team’s most consistent players as the year went on. Roberson was forced into an embiggened role following McCullough’s injury, and reached double figures in the scoring column in eight of the 15 games that McCullough missed. Over the last three games against Duke, Virginia, and NC State, Roberson averaged 14.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game and shot 51.6% from the field, primarily doing yeoman’s work on the offensive glass or getting out on the break for one of the few fast break opportunities that the team saw this season. The key for Roberson will be developing his midrange jump shot, and improving his confidence. There times when he still looked skittish when he caught the ball, but in the moments where he made quick, decisive moves to the basket, he looked terrific. If he can add a consistent 15 footer to his repertoire, he’s got a chance to earn All-Conference honors next season."

I agree with most of this. I stressed playmaking in my earlier post. We desperately need this from our guards. Cooney cannot create for others. He is a disaster trying to do so. Fine, not his game. We need him to shoot, drive a little into pull-ups/midrange. Fine. Kaleb is a wild card still along with the frosh coming in. I am just afraid that Silent G has peaked and we have seen the best of him. Next year he will get more attention. He is a decent athlete with a decent handle. Not great in either dept. IMO, he struggled against the better defenders once other teams started to pay attention to him more end of the season. Granted he was out of position bailing out KJ at PG; but he was another one who would pick up his dribble too far from the basket. We'll see.

Why not? Personally I'm not sure who will be one the roster next fall and likely won't until June or so at the latest. So I'll give what I think I know and then guesses on what I know I don't know yet.
Know:
Cooney will start at 2G and be our designated shooter.

Don't Know:
CMac - ll be on the roster and IF healthy our best player and #1 scoring option. He'll get minutes at the 3,4 & 5 spots and be our 2nd leading rebounder.
G - Will LIKELY be here and our starting SF. I see a year a lot like this year though he'll have more and better options to involve in the game. Also LIKELY to run the offense when KJo is out.
KJo - Will be the PG and HOPEFULLY improve his running the offense. Needs to shoot better and also make better entry passes. Also needs to be solid on D.
DC2 - LIKELY starting C. Also LIKELY to play around 20 - 25 minutes and provide a taste of the low post game we got from Rak this year..
Malachi - LIKELY #1 option off the bench. #2 designated shooter. Versatility of CMac and G mean he can come in for any of the 5 starters if need be. A small lineup with G and Malachi at could be interesting against a few teams early that do not have much size.
TRob - Option #1B off the bench for the frontline. If the 4 or 5 are coming off TRob WILL be the #1A option. If he starts hitting the 6-8 foot pull up jumper he could be DEADLY.
BJ - LIKELY to return and play more consistent minutes. COULD push ahead of Malachi based on his experience. If Lydon equals BJ in the shooting department BJ minutes may disappear.
Diagne - POSSIBLY the backup C. Minutes will depend on how much we see CMac at the 5. Little offense expected.
Howard - IDEALLY he will be the backup PG and his minutes would jump up to the 8 spot behind Malachi and TRob. Way too unknown for me to even guess at. If he is the backup PG that would be good for SU.
Lydon -IF he can make jumpers he could work into the front line equation. I'm interested to see him play. I'm expecting Bobby Lazor and hoping he's not Mark Konecny.
Patterson/Obokoh - Did someone say offense?
Bryant - The WILDCARD! If he comes I guess he starts and will be good for 10-12 pts a game. Hard to expect much more than that from a freshman joining a team with most everyone returning.

Coleman looks great and certainly seems to want it. I just hope his knee holds up and he can run. He could have a big year. It's his time if there is one for him.

It will be the G and Cmac show next year. Roberson will be a beast for us and Cooney should receive less minutes improving his consistency. Malachi is a McDonald's all American and don't forget Coleman has the talent to be a force. If Joseph doesn't make a huge jump then expect his minutes to go to G and Malachi. VERY talented team next year. (didn't even mention the 3 other freshmen) or the possibility of Bryant.

I actually agree with this. The fact that the offense will run through Gbinije and McCullough, and hopefully Roberson cleaning up the scraps on the inside with an improved slashing game from Joseph should put Cooney in perfect position, theoretically, to focus on being the 3rd option floating around the perimeter. But then again, this should have been the case this year, too. Maybe his back was worse than we thought. That, or his decision making and thought process on which shots to actually take...because while he missed a lot of open looks, he also took a TON of really stupid shots.

Cooney needs to hover around the perimeter. His main role needs to be 3 pointers to spread the offense. G/ Roberson/ CMAC and friends have the inside taken care of.

I agree on TC, he needs the same role that JSuth had for us on O during the FF run. Ie work the perimeter and spread the D. TC tried to do way too much this year. Also JS didnt play too many mins during our FF run so his legs were still fresh for big crunch time shots, like against Marq in elite 8

G, TC and Malachi could give us our best spacing next yr since the 2010 season, heck maybe even since 2003 ;-)

When we have consistent outside shooting, lanes and space opens up for our big guys...SO PUMPED

Don't forget my boy Tyler Lydon. And, maybe, hopefully, BJ will become consistent.

Next year could POTENTIALLY be our best shooting team since 09-10.

you are going to be very surprised.

our offense next year.
You're sticking with this vague proclamation thing eh?

I'm not sure I'll be surprised. I'm just curious to know now how you see things shaking out.
