I hate to contemplate that prospect as they are arguably two of the most important players on the team, certainly on the offense.

They were both McDonald recruits.

HCSS needed to elevate our recruiting game and he had to give George McDonald the OC job to get him. I don't think anyone will argue that he would have come here without it. He was the WR coach at Arkansas and was not going to leave for SU on a lateral move.

At the same time HCSS hedged his bet with Lester, which I think was pretty smart.

I would say the hedge worked. We have both Steve and Brisly and a very promising and exciting offense.

Time to give Shafer some credit for taking a reasonable risk with his first staff and then acting to correct the decision quickly. A lot like he managed his defenses.

Estime has been key for us. He's making special teams better. He and Riley Dixon teamed up to get us good field position against LSU. That really helped. He's gained I think 614 total yards including his punt & kickoff returns and is essentially tied with Ishmael for receiving yards. Ishmael has really contributed to our big play capability. We need them to stay healthy.

Good insight and well thought-out commentary!
But now I want to know who recruited those amazing freshman players.

LOL - I am starting to think that Shafer also decided that he could do a better job recruiting himself! These guys can certainly recruit and winning will accelerate their progress. Amazing how much better the kids are.

I agree Crusty, it was a calculated risk to hire GM as the OC and an excellent backup plan to have Lester in place.

Still blows me away though that GM was that bad as an OC. Poor scheme, poor teaching, apparently froze in the booth often or defaulted to the same play when stressed.
It's no wonder to me that he didn't get along with the other offensive coaches. I suspect they were challenging his plan (because they saw the issues) and he didn't like it or wouldn't listen.
