In reviewing this year and in particular our starters one area that jumps out is how light this team is. With the exception of our Defensive backfield and Guards we lack size.
DT, LB, WR, TE, Tackle positions all lack size. Strength is important but when your opponent has 30 or more pounds on you its a disadvantage. As they say. Size matters.

I feel like we have about 10 threads with this title over the past couple years, and that you might have started half of them.

At this point I think this title should only be used for links to the classic Wendy’s commercial.

Chip please do us a favor. Find one of the previous 10 threads and give one a bump.

Servais always in my mind looked a bit under sized for an o line player.

Its cool to look back on these. Miss Cali and Dans post big time. Thx for reposting Bees.

Might not have been you but the were to small , were to slow ......threads pop up regularly, although everyone seemed Ok with our size around Dec. 29th 2018.

He looked a lot better when recruited (6ft 5, 275 or so, with the potential to add weight). Llast season, Servais was listed at 290 or 295. He decided to get leaner for this season.

Overall, we are average in size, below average in a few key spots (NT).

He is undersized to play inside.
Held is own at tackle and Eric Wood was raving about his ability to pulling with the speed and ability to get to the next level of blocking. This is way I believe they wanted him under 300 for the year. Injuries to C just made it backfire.

Agreed and yes im sure i had post on this in the past as i do tend to become a broken record when i get on a rant. Just ask Gmac:) anyway back to our size i think that its attributable to two things.
1: We dont land the ready to go 4-5 star studs. So we need to hope that the kids with good frames fill out and grow into the position.
2: Dino places a huge emphasis on speed " we are only as fast as our slowest player". Im fine with this but i hope guys like White and Tisdale are not being passed over because of this.

There have been at least two others within the last 6 weeks.

Size has been shown to have a correlation with success. Although I bet that has more to do with age then actual size. A 5th year SR is more likely to be more developed than a 4th year player who is bigger than a 3rd who is bigger than a 2nd who is bigger than a 1st. So if you have a big team you likely are a powerhouse or a team full of upperclassmen. So is size really the main driver?

I think tisdale is being groomed at guard for a good reason. We have Adams ahead of him and he looks physically ready but maybe not mentally. Serv pulled great last game. His size is doable at tackle not at center. Adams and Davis are big but this game was the first I saw Davis pile drive people. Backs did well sitting behind big dogs till they saw light. We did what we haven’t done all year. Richards has Mike size and made a mistake or two but also made some good plays with his length and size. Does need to learn situations like 3 rd and short didn’t come downhill fast enough and they got first down bye a nose. In that situation he shoulda been screaming. Cantin is big ass lb we do need more size but don’t want to be slow either. Really need black and Williams to get to 290 plus next year. Secondary is good size except Cordy who played great sat. I bag on him but man he shut me up and I am happy about it.

Somebody posted a chart for all ACC teams as to size, height, weight and where SU falls at each position group as it related to the conference.

SU was far from at the bottom of that chart, maybe for a position or 2.

I don't recall who, maybe they should pin that thread to stop people from posting "Where's The Beef Threads" ?

OL I have no issue with size. For next season I'd like to see Josh Black gain 20lbs

As always, we very very rarely get the giant guys who move like NFL players. So you pick smaller and athletic or larger and slow... sometimes you find a guy who is growing still or just started playing, etc. and they grow into the position

Feel like Dino has said “give me the athletic guys and we’ll develop them“

Agreed, we need one more thread about our receivers not being able to beat press coverage as well and that we need better athletes at the skill position.

I'm going to channel my inner SWC and say it's a great question for the Coaches show-i.e. we are light at certain positions, most notably at DT (though better w/ Mckinley back). Does he consider weight important at these positions? i would love to have a couple of 300+ pound run stuffers.

Servais had a couple of hiccups on Saturday but his overall agility and athleticism stood out on a number of plays. Go watch the long Neal run when he almost go in the endzone. Servais cuts a guy at the line, falls down, gets up and chases down Neal. He's the in the frame when Neal hits the pilon. I think this is sort of what they had in mind when the slimmed him down to play tackle.

The interior OLineman have pretty good size. The two deep Guards go Adams 352, DDavis 327, Tisdale 295 (I think he's heavier), PDavis 317, and Chandler 303.

Bergeron at Tackle is 311 but runs like he's 275. Servais its 275 needs to I'd say play at 285. Pat Davis is the backup as mentioned above he's 317. RED is 281 and looked really slim - too slim - when he got in against Duke.

The centers go Vet 289 and Duerig 327

Overall the offensive line size is fine. And they all have great height. Duerig at 6-3 is the shortest.

The defensive line is problematic. We need to get bigger in there. You can see what a load Ruff and Elmore are in there and both go 300 it shows. Williams is is 282 but gets away with it because he's so freaking quick. Black 270 hurts. Harper starting to get rotation minutes is 300. We need a couple of more 300lb-ers. Rondi and Munoz are next in line only listed at 255.
(We only lose Ruff. Elmore and Williams should return and really solidy the DLine next season.)

LB is woefully undersized. I'm sort of hoping the new RB recruit - Marlow Wax - gets moved to LB. The other kid coming in - Thompson - has good size. Mikel Jones is fiery but too small. Haven't seen enough of Wallace. or Kopobga. Richards and Arku have great size but need the mental part. Hoping Arku can take over on the outside next year.

The last 300+ pound DL I know of on the 2-deep were Chris and Steven.

Concerning Steven, he was about 315 pounds in his freshman year, and dropped to between 295-300 pounds in his sophomore year.

Think this year's starting LB's are okay sizewise, but Jones and especially Wallace look like safeties. I hope they can put on some good weight this offseason.

Wallace is listed at 223lbs which is about the same as L. Williams.

This is a rehash of something Bnoro said a few months ago. Big AND athletically elite coming out of high school is incredibly rare. Those guys are going high P5.

For Syracuse, there's two routes. Undersized and elite athlete or big and decent athlete. This staff seems to prefer undersized and growing guys. This route makes sense, but it, of course, has its drawbacks.

But there's not really another option available.

either route will work, but when you go our way you have you have less room for misses since it will be 2-3 yrs before you know it work and/or a replacement is ready. clemson/ala can be wrong but they but the next yr they have 2-3 bodies that may be able to step in. imagine if Cisco hadnt played as a FR, the backups are just getting to where we need them and the LBs every yr are a work in progress.

Are you referring to prior to this year? Ruff is 300+. Elmore is a shade under 300. Also have Curtis Harper at 300. No longer on the 2 deep due to McKinley's return. I think because Black is a bit undersized for the position people state we don't have the size we need at DT. While we're a bit smaller than the ideal DT, I don't think it's as big a problem as we make it out to be.
