TAMPA — Count Gainesville High linebacker and USF recruit Tashon Whitehurst among the surprised to hear Greg Schiano left Rutgers to become the Bucs' coach.

Whitehurst made an official visit to Rutgers, among his finalists with USF and Syracuse, last weekend.

"I was at (Schiano's) house," Whitehurst said Friday. "We watched the NFL game, Patriots and Ravens."

Rutgers assistants Chris Hewitt and Robb Smith were at Gainesville High on Thursday when the news broke. Whitehurst said he was taking a test when they arrived and by the time he finished, they had left.

"They hadn't known about Coach Schiano leaving," he said.

Rutgers named offensive line coach Kyle Flood as interim coach. Whitehurst said he will wait to see if the school names a permanent coach before eliminating it from consideration.

"I still love their coaches, and I enjoyed my visit," he said. "I know there's a lot of money involved (in the Bucs job), and I know (Schiano) has four kids and a wife to take care of."

Whitehurst, a three-star recruit according to , previously orally committed to Syracuse. He said USF assistants Phil McGeoghan and Vernon Hargreaves visited his school Tuesday and he will announce a decision Wednesday on national signing day.

"I have all three hats ready," he said.

he failed to mention the kilos of coke and the brazilian strippers greeting the recruits at greg's door.

id take this kid as a project down the road...but he looks like a freakin soccer midfielder...I love my futbol too, but losing this kid is no biggie IMO.

Does he really think Schiano needs more money for his family? Is the standard of living in Jersey such that you need more than 2mil/year to support a family? I realize he's trying to be polite about this whole situation but if he actually believes that, then the kid's an absolute idiot.

Looks like he'll stay Orange after a soft verbal. RT @orangeskin "Which hat is Whitehurst picking?"

Actually, I thought it was a pretty mature thing to say. And I don't think the kid is an idiot if he thinks schiano made the decision that he felt was in the best interest of his actual .a.m.i.l.y.

Didn't Bruce Pearl get in trouble for having recruits at his house? I thought it was an NCAA violation.

As I understand it, it's ok on official visits. Not ok on unofficial visits. Pearl got in trouble when recruting Aaron Craft when he was still a Junior, thus on an unofficial visit, then compounded it by lying to the NCAA about it.

He's certainly not built like Lambert or Miles Davis, that's for sure. That's the biggest knock on TW, he's built like a DB. Ya gotta love his swagger though, a 3 hat selection presser at 3:00PM on signing day. Oh, the drama. Wouldn't it be ironic if HCDM got a de-commit to sign at the last minute and told TW he was a little too late on his firm commit? Seriously, I'm pretty sure that hat will be Orange and this is all for show.
