Thank you for this post. This validates what I've been saying for a while. The two biggest differences I see between a Dungey-led offense and Tommy is 1) the unwillingness to throw to the slot using the quick game and 2) the unwillingness to challenge the edge defender on the inside zone read. These were both bread and butter plays with Dungey and they complimented each other in addition to creating the situation where we could take a deep shot over the top of the defense. The quick game to the slot and then the quick throw to the slot lined up in a stack for a quick screen were both essential plays as they would force the outside linebackers to line up outside the box. This would set up inside zone which would then force the safeties to decrease their distance from the line. That opens up the vertical passing game. I see the quick slants and outs run by the slot receivers all the time. Their only responsibility is to get past the outside linebacker and the ball should get thrown, even with minimal separation, it's like a guaranteed 4-5 yard gain. Tommy will not throw this ball and it's mind boggling. I can't believe the coaches are not tearing into him over it. And I think that is behind the appearance of the wide receivers not working back to the ball. The window of opportunity on those plays is less than 2 seconds from the snap. The ball has to get out quickly for it to be effective. I also think the sideline wide receiver screens have basically disappeared from the offense under Tommy because they need this part of the quick game to be effective in order to get the kind of spacing needed from the defense to make this a high probability play. It's not all on the offensive line.
