If you had to pick the player that had the greatest year ever who would you pck? I think the obvious answer might be Ernie Davis I mean he won the Heisman and it was historic. I am going to stick with players I have seen and two stick out for me

Dwight Freeney,s senior year was insane he was awesome maybe the best year ever by a defensive player at cuse.

Don Mcpherson in 1987 should have won the Heisman he was truly magic and the game against west virginia was one for the ages

if big east refs had called holding in 2001, freeney would've had 10 more sacks

Didn't he throw 4 interceptions against WVU in 1987?

I worked with a former Big East official, said Freeney was one of the most amazing players he ever watched live.

THE most amazing he ever saw? Michael Vick, said there was nobody like him in the 20 or so years he did the Big East.

Vick is was just a gifted gifted athlete, put him in the Randy Moss type category of athlete, truly rare.

I wonder how many times in his career (pro and college) he got into the backfield so quickly that he was mistakenly called offsides. I know I witnessed that at least twice.

Some under the radar seasons -

1. QB Ryan Nassib 2012, Best passing season in SU history, 62.4%, 3,749 yards, 26/10 td/int, rushed for 142 yds and 2 tds
Also led the Big East Conference in completions, yards (passing and total) and touchdowns (passing and total).

2. LB Doug Hogue 2009 (Was pretty good in 2010 too), 72 tackles, 16 for loss, 9.5 sacks, 1 int, 2 FF.

3. LB Derrell Smith 2009 (What a year for LB production), 82 tackles, 10.5 for loss, 6.5 sacks, 4 FF.

4. DT Jay Bromley 2013, 42 tackles, 14.5 for loss, 10 sacks, 3 FF.

5. LB Cam Lynch 2014, 97 tackles, 12.0 for loss, 7 sacks, 1 FF.

Just imagine what type of numbers he would have put up if we didn't play the hardest schedule in college football history that year according to some posters (45th most difficult in the country that year).

(Sarcasm aside, I agree with you, Nassib was great in 2012. Almost certainly the only year post-McNabb that our QB play was above average).

I think Chris Gedney in 1992 should be in the conversation. His numbers aren't mind-blowing since we didn't throw a ball a ton, but he was a first-team All-American.

He also led the nation in passing. Along with leading his team to a unbeaten season.
I'm just saying that the WVU game was a clunker with a memorable ending. Not dumping on the season.

Hogue & Smith were quite the duo at LB. And I believe they both started out as RB's.

Bromley is 1 of my favorite players in recent memory. Overall, the DL he played on wasn't anything great, but he always made things happen even though everyone knew he was the guy they needed to be concerned about.

You are correct, Smith and Hogue were both RBs originally. Bromley was a monster, and the most important player on our defense that year. 10 sacks from a DT is no joke.

Funny how Syracuse really doesn't have any big stat stuffers. Before my time, maybe Art Monk or Joe Morris? From '87 on, I'd say Reyes - just on pure #'s.

My top ones would be Jim Brown '56 and Dwight Freeney '01. Both carried otherwise mediocre teams on their backs to great seasons. Davis' Heisman was a great honor for three great seasons. McPherson had a great year but guys were having great years all around him, too.

Jim Brown in 1956 rushed for 986 yards in 8 regular season games and 132 more in the Cotton Bowl for a total of 1,118 with 16 TDs. That would be 1,490 yards and 21 in 12 games, which is what they play now. And Jim played both ways, meaning not only did he play defense but he wasn't on the field for all of our offensive plays: they alternated 1st and 2nd teams. Oh, and he did the kicking, too.

I wonder what Offensive Lineman graded out with the best season in SU history.

It wasn't any of these guys:
