Who is Mike Cavanaugh? Meet the man tasked with fixing Syracuse football’s offensive line

Dead Man Walking.

We were warned - Nebraska fans said we would rue this hire, and here we are.

Given that we have a sufficient # of large, strong, reasonably athletic humans on the O-Line (vs the undersized D3-looking lines we had under Shafer) -
It clearly comes down to the mental aspects, and that all falls on coaching.

Or posters shouldn't always believe what fans from other fan bases post. Remember Drew Allen?

I still blame Lynch.

Remember last in sacks given up and 2nd to last in penalties committed? I'll take the Nebraska fans side on this one until Cav proves he's not CURRENTLY the worst OL coach in the country. Kids loved Grob and Shafer too remember?

I'll say it again. If you think these coaches are going anywhere you are going to be sadly disappointed.

If there aren’t massive changes made in the offseason to respond to the absolute tire fire this season has devolved into myself and a whole lot of other season ticket holders will be voting with their wallets.

Hopefully the coaches won’t be sadly disappointed.

Not happy with this puff piece by Bailey making Cavanaugh look good. Yes, he put a few linemen into the NFL, whoop-de-doo. His lines also regressed under his tenure at both Oregon State and Nebraska.

I was the biggest supporter of Babers up until this season, but my patience has grown real thin with this la familia hoopla and his thin skin responses to the media. If we retain Cavanaugh, this team is going no where but 3-9, and poor Tommy is going to look like a crash dummy.

You know who else put some players in the NFL over his long coaching career?

Greg Robinson.

This article has loads of complimentary things to say about our current Ol coach. If he is doing a quality job developing our OL players, mostly, that leaves play-calling, QB ineffectiveness and player attitude as the heart of the issues with all the sacks.
Let's hope that after the season HCDB does an in-depth look at the issue.

Our line hasn't regressed, maybe you haven't been paying attention.

There are 3 brand new starters, 2 freshmen and a sophomore as well as a 2 year starter playing out of position.

The problem isnt the coaching, it's the experience and physical ability. You know, men on the DL going against boys that haven't grown up yet into men.

Yep, I haven’t been paying attention as our red shirt junior center gets blown five yards into the back field. And before you use the “he’s playing out of position excuse”, I highly doubt at 270 lbs he’d be able to block any average to above average ACC end on a consistent basis. The fact that he’s even playing center is an even bigger indictment on Cavanaugh since no other lineman got meaningful reps at the position in camp.

Part of coaching is also evaluation, and last I checked Ryan Alexander played about three games too long while a gentleman named Matthew Bergeron was sitting on the bench with much better physical ability.

Div1 football teams shouldn't have embarrassing O-line play week after week. Babers needs to figure this out. He should have already figured it out. You can be young and inexperienced without being one of the worst O-lines in the history of the universe.

BS. We have arguably one of the worst lines in all of FBS. That's not due to a little youth and inexperience. You guys act like Dino was hired last year, told the entire OL to take a walk and put 5 new guys out there who have never played in his offense. None of it is true. And if you think that is the only issue, you are going to be very disappointed in the results under this current methodology.

Then I'll say it now, again, and again and again and again. Most SU fans will be disappointed in next year. We have seen almost zero growth from our offense this year.

Pittsburgh has four new starters on the offensive line and have given up 19 sacks for 113 yards. BC also has four new starters and have given up 5 sacks for 26 yards lost. Many of the offensive line problems at Syracuse in 2019 are directly tied to coaching, whether it be Lynch or Cavanaugh. Confusion on who to block on pass rushes, blocking schemes that don't fit the plays you are trying to run. This is a serious problem that needs to be fully examined at seasons end.

Well, Dino's job is going to be in jeopardy if they play like this again next year.

I think he needs a new & young O line coach, and I think he needs an offensive coordinator who sits upstairs so he can see the whole field.

Our defensive coaches have to re-teach the LBs and DBs to wrap up on their tackles, and not just think you can hit a guy with your shoulder pad and he's going to go down.
