I’ve researched how many losses Syracuse has had to losing teams in its 46 years streak of winning seasons and decided to throw in the even teams at no extra charge. There have bene 32 losses to losers and 6 losses to teams who lost as much as they won. 2/11/72 at Pittsburgh, (who finished 12-12) 99-109 12/28/73 vs. Miami University (13-13) in Charlotte invitational, Charlotte NC 74-96 2/11/74 at West Virginia (10-15) 77-78 1/29/75 at Penn State (11-12) 84-88 2/7/76 at Pittsburgh (12-15) 67-71 2/21/81 at Seton Hall (11-16) 65-66 2/7/83 at Pittsburgh (13-15) 74-85 3/5/83 at Connecticut (12-16) 54-55 1/19/85 Connecticut (13-15) 68-70 2/20/85 at Connecticut (13-15) 69-71 3/2/89 at Boston College (12-17) 87-90 1/21/92 at Villanova (14-15) 60-70 1/28/92 at Providence (14-17) 73-87 3/8/92 Villanova (14-15) 56-76 1/2/93 Villanova (8-19) 61-79 2/6/93 at University of Miami (10-17) 74-81 3/1/95 at St. John’s (14-14) 78-82 1/16/96 at West Virginia (12-15) 78-90 2/20/96 at Seton Hall (12-16) 79-80 2/12/97 at St. John’s (13-14) 87-91 1/13/98 Providence (13-16) 64-76 1/21/98 at Notre Dame (13-14) 63-83 2/7/98 Seton Hall (15-15) 61-85 2/21/98 at Rutgers (14-15) 58-62 12/9/98 at West Virginia (10-19) 59-73 12/12/98 Seton Hall (15-15) 64-80 12/16/01 at Georgia Tech (15-16) 80-96 1/19/02 at Tennessee (15-16) 62-66 1/29/03 at Rutgers (12-16) 65-68 (Yup, the Lamizana shots – the ESPN College Basketball Encyclopedia ranks our team the 9th “worst national champion” of all time because we lost this game.) 3/2/06 at DePaul (12-15) 69-108 (The worst defeat of the Boeheim Era.) 1/9/08 at Cincinnati (13-19) 66-74 2/13/08 at South Florida (12-19) 78-89 1/25/11 Seton Hall (13-18) 68-90 2/19/14 Boston College (8-24) 59-62 (OT) 3/4/14 Georgia Tech (16-17) 62-67 12/2/14 at Michigan (16-16) 65-68 12/5/15 Georgetown (15-18) 72-79 12/13/15 St. John’s (8-24) 72-84 This year we’ve lost to Connecticut (7-10) 50-52, St. John’s (9-11) 60-93 and Boston College (9-9) 81-96. Of course, we don’t yet know what their final records will be. Twenty Six of our bad losses have bene on the road and one at a neutral court. I don’t see a trend of our worst teams of the era being the ones to lose to bad teams. The 16-13 team of 1981-82 lost all 13 games to teams with winning records. The best team of the Leo Rautins Era the next year lost two games to losers. The 1996-97 NIT team that went 19-13 lost one game to a loser. The 1996 Final Four team lost two such games and the 1998 team that went 26-9 had three of them. The team that most fans consider out most talented, the 1988-89 team that Had Sherman Douglas, Derrick Coleman, Stevie Thompson and Billy Owens even had a loss to a loser. Here is a ranking of the Top Ten worst losses to non-winning teams, based on the combined number of games they were under .5000 and the margin of defeat: 3/2/06 at DePaul (12-15) 69-108 = -42 1/2/93 Villanova (8-19) 61-79 = -29 12/13/15 St. John’s (8-24) 72-84 = -28 1/25/11 Seton Hall (13-18) 68-90 = -27 2/7/98 Seton Hall (15-15) 61-85 = -24 12/9/98 at West Virginia (10-19) 59-73 = -23 12/28/73 vs. Miami University (13-13) in Charlotte invitational, Charlotte NC 74-96 = -22 3/8/92 Villanova (14-15) 56-76 = -21 1/21/98 at Notre Dame (13-14) 63-83 = -21 2/19/14 Boston College (8-24) 59-62 (OT) Certainly the most surreal were the DePaul nightmare and a 25-0 #1 ranked team in strange uniforms losing at home to a Boston College team that was 6-19 at the time.
