I did a little statistical analysis on four coaches and recruiting: Calipari (Memphis and UK), Boeheim, Coach K and Roy Williams. It's nothing spectacular - I basically just took Rivals 150 lists and adjusted wins to how many recruits since 2003 (first year that the 150 lists came out). Here are some results. Keep in mind the limitations of the rivals lists (and starting after the NC in 2003)...
# of 150 recruits/year @ average rank:
Cal: Memphis = 2.7 @ 48 , UK = 4.3 @ 15 (~70% of recruits were top 30!)
Boeheim: 2.3 @ 53
Coach K: 3.2 @ 44
Roy: 3.1 @ 39
Regular season wins/year/150 recruit (not adjusted by rank):
Cal: Memphis = 11.2, UK = 7.9
Boeheim: 12.8
K: 10.2
Roy: 10.2
Post-season wins/year/150 recruit (not adjusted by rank):
Cal Memphis = .86, UK = 1
Boeheim: .48
K: .66
Roy: .97
I hate to say it but it appears that Coach Cal is not only a great salesman, but a damn good coach, just maybe. These are some pretty volatile numbers, though, especially the post-season ones: If Syracuse managed to just get say 5 more wins since 2003-2004 (not outrageous considering the bad luck of 2010 and 2012 tournament) it would be .72/year/recruit so who knows.
