- Because they are still Florida State and we are still Syracuse. If Monte Hall came back from the grave and offered Dino Babers the choice of their roster or ours, which do you think he would choose?

- 10/10/15. Accurater invited me over to watch the South Florida game. He was really worried about it but I wasn’t. We had opened with three straight wins over Rhode Island, Wake Forest and Central Michigan. Then, with Eric Dungey hurt due to the dirty play of the Chippy Wahs, we had to play nationally ranked LSU with Zach Mahoney, who had, at one time been our sixth string quarterback. It figured to be a slaughter but it wasn’t: we lost an exciting, competitive 24-34 game. I’d watched South Florida lose to Memphis. It was their 21st loss in 28 games under Willie Taggart, who was on the verge of being fired. I expected an easy win. Instead, we got a discouraging 24-45 loss. Even more discouraging, it was the second of 8 straight losses that got Scott Shafer fired. Meanwhile Taggart began an 18-4 stretch, (which included a 45-20 win voer SU in the Dome the next year), that got him first the Oregon job and then the Florida State job. The point is, with Willie Taggart, there can be a turning point where his team suddenly “gets it” and becomes formidable and such a turning point can also be a turning point for use where promising season falls apart. It could happen again.

- We think our offense has bene dominating games but, in fact, we’ve outgained western Michigan and Wagner by a net 107 yards in two games. We are averaging 58.5 ppg because of field positon. The defense has gotten turnovers in the other team’s territory. The kicking teams have punted the ball and kicked it off well. We’ve had some good returns, blocked a punt and tackled the punter after a bad snap. The other team has pooched the ball to avoid our returners and fair caught the ball to avoid our gunners. We’ve started our 31 drives a combined 750 yards closer to the goal line than they have started their 31 drives. Last night, on the Dino Babers Show, Justin Lustig, the special teams coach suggested that the Florida State game could be very different. Their athletes allow them to cover kicks well and make then a threat to return them, so they will likely be kicking for the end zone and not fair catching balls that don’t make it to their end zone. We may have a harder time getting turnovers of blocked kicks as well. If the field position is about equal, where do we stand in the battle of the offenses? Our passing has been erratic and the running game has been mostly Dungey.

- Virginia Tech and Clemson never saw us coming. Florida State certainly won’t be looking past us. They need this game as much as we do.

- I asked Dino Babers if this team has the level of depth he wants. He said will in about a year and a half. We aren’t there yet.

All fair points, except maybe the depth issue. It is the 3rd game of the season (and the first tough challenge) -- all hands healthy on our side. What will count is the quality of our 1s.
