-Since 1967: 20-29, 12-30, 14-15, 23-7, 0-31, 0-17, 6-49, 14-30, 7-19, 3-27, 24-31, 15-45, 7-35, 7-24, 16-41, 7-28, 6-17, 3-21, 20-24, 3-42, 48-21, 24-14, 12-34, 21-27, 13-55, 7-28. When the white helmets meet the orange helmets, it’s the orange helmets that tend to give way. -The Nittany Lions are still the Nittany Lions. There are fewer of them but they can still roar. They aren’t the team that started 0-2 last year. They are the team that went 8-2 after that. -Bill O’Brien is “a hell of a football coach”. Just ask him. -Scott Shafer, on his show last night, seemed to agree with the experts that our talent level is less than that of most of the opposition we’ll face this year. He is hopeful, (his word) that we can make up for that by playing “hard-nosed”. Penn State knows how to play “hard-nosed”, too. -Shafer has been on the sidelines for one game in his life, when Jim Harbaugh insisted on it. He’s never run a team from there. -George McDonald is a heck of a recruiter but he’s never called plays. Our main guys could be in over their heads. Remember when G-Rob had a staff of guys who had never done what they were doing before? -With Fiunderburke apparently a wash-out, our receiver situation looks kind of thin. West and Flemming are big guys but can they get separation and break the big play. Kobena can get separation but can he maintain contact with the ball? Clark can run and catch but has no body. He’s like a watersprite among a bunch of bullfrogs. Our most dynamic players seem to be the H-backs. But how often will they be used? -We can only imagine what it would be like to have a receiver like Allen Robinson. He and Funderburke are exactly the same size, 6-3, 201. Sigh… -If we can’t get the passing game going, they can load up on the running game and Smith, Gulley, Morris and McFarland won’t look so talented when they do. -Who would you rather have: Justin Pugh and Zach Chibane or Nick Robinson and Ivan Foy? The O-line can’t be as good as it was last year, at least not at this point. -Shafer referred to some injuries at the defensive end position that have “left us thin”. If we can get an edge rush from either end, even young quarterbacks like the two Penn State guys can pick us apart. And those are highly rated quarterbacks. Being a frosh didn’t seem to hurt Teddy Bridgewater a couple of years ago. -Shafer referred to the importance of securing possession on kicks. Obviously that’s essential but I hope we aren’t going to stay in the fair-catch mode. The “Salt Badger” isn’t even our back-up punt returner at this point. We could use some big plays from the kicking game. Where will we get them?
