- Because Pittsburgh is a 5-5 team with a chance to become bowl eligible. They lost last week and are 3-1 coming off a loss. Besides, Syracuse has a lot of injuries. - Our injuries are worse than Pitt’s. We’ve lost our #1B running back, Prince Tyson-Gulley, our most dynamic receiver and kick returner, Brisley Estime, our most experienced receiver, Jarrod West, a fine young Defensive End, Isaiah Johnson, a fine young defensive back, Julian Whigham and reserve receiver Ben Lewis. Already out for the season were a a starting wide receiver, Adrian Flemming, a starting cornerback, our place-kicker Ross Krautman, a big defensive tackle, John Raymon and reserve defensive lineman Tyler Marona. Also, reserve center Jason Emerich is doubtful . Pittsburgh is not sure offensive linemen Adam Bisnowaty or Cory King will place nor defensive backs Titus Howard or Trenton Collins. Quarterback Tom Savage got “banged” against North Carolina and had to leave the game but came back to play and will probably play in our game. If somehow a deal could be made to play with everyone healthy, I’d take that deal right now. - People are talking about going 8-5 again and wouldn’t that be a great start to our tenure in the ACC? This is not a good team disguised by a mediocre record. It’s a bad team disguised by a mediocre record. We got blown out by a Northwestern team that now has a losing record and were never competitive with Clemson, Georgia Tech or Florida State. We own victories over Wagner, Tulane, North Carolina State, Wake Forest and Maryland. None of those are good teams. Yeah, Tulane and Maryland have winning records and will be going bowling but Tulane lost to South Alabama, Florida International and Texas-San Antonio and Maryland was wiped out by injuries. We can give thanks next week that we had so many lousy teams on our schedule. - Pittsburgh and Boston College are both much better than anyone we’ve beaten. The Panthers lost to Florida State by 28 and Georgia Tech by 11. And they beat Notre Dame. Boston College lost to Florida State by 14 and Clemson by 10 and will be coming in here on a four game winning streak if they can win at Maryland, which they should. - Early in the season our biggest problem was that we couldn’t cover anybody in the secondary. Then we made some adjusts in both strategy and personnel and began to shut down some teams, getting things like coverage sacks that we hadn’t seen in a long time. We found out Julian Whigham was probably our best cover guy. Now he’s hurt and Keon Lyn is gone. So is Isaiah Johnson, who had become perhaps our best pass rusher. We went back to playing soft coverage vs. Florida State. We also played a series of teams that couldn’t pass very well, largely due to injuries. Now here comes Pitt with two play-on- Sunday guys, Devin Street, (6-4, 190 with 49 catches for 847 yards and 7 TDs) and Tyler Boyd, (6-2 185 with 58 catches for 821 yards and 6 scores). We aren’t going to be able to cover those guys. Nor can we answer them. Our leading receiver is Ashton Broyld with 36 catches for 339 yards and no touchdowns. - Everybody remembers Tom Savage getting knocked around the Dome as the Rutgers quarterback back in 2009. He was a freshman then. He’s now a 6-5 230 senior who is 178 for 292, (61%) for 2335 yards, 18TDs and 7 interceptions. Again, what is our answer? Terrel Hunt is 101 for 173 for 1021 yards, 7TDs and 7 interceptions. That’s no answer.
